How many of you use one of those 80 foot long jigging pole ( ok 16 foot but it looks like its 80) Been thinking about getting one for working around some docks in my cove. What are the pro's and con's. I normally fish by myself so knocking people out of the boat is not a concern.

Personally never used one, and don't plan on it. The longest pole I use for jigging is 10'. Wes and I troll with longer poles, but that is it.

My longest one is 9' (I think) and the only thing I use it for is jig/bobber fishing in the spring, I dont like it for brush fishing.

I use a 12 and a 9, the 9 is easier in the brush, the 12 can get awkward at times.

i would only use the longer poles for spider rigging. i have tried them for timber, but didnt care for it to much.

In the spring when I wade fish I like my 12 footer, but other than that it sits in the garage.

What about around docks? I'm thinking I can jig around dock legs with less boating around it.

10' is the longest I ever went. Anything longer is just too akward for most style of fishing that I do.

around docks i like an even shorter rod, you can shoot the jig under it or even cast around it with a road runner/jig. I'm not trying to discourage you, because it may work for you....but in my experience the longer the pole, the more time I spend trying to untangle line(especially if there is any wind) and the harder it becomes to land fish

I have a few 4.5 and even a 4, but i'm guess I just want to buy something. I'm going to hit up Finny on my way to the lake this weekend, sure I can hold off shopping till then.

A 10' jigging pole is the optimum for spring fishing. For docks, an 8' works better for me if you're trying to place the jig around the legs. If you want the jig further back in the shade, use a 5-6.5' and pitch or shoot the jig back there. Problem with the longer pole is setting the hook. Not much clearance above the water and you hit the dock too hard and damage the pole. Keeping the tip of the rod out from under the dock lets you set the hook better and control the fish.
