My 1999 Ford F150 4.6 has been acting up lately. It seems to be cutting out a little when I get on the highway. Its hard to describe what its doing. I first thought the transmission was slipping, but I really dont think thats it. It shifts just fine. Maybe a fuel filter?

Could be a number of things. Got the 4.6L V8 part. How many miles? Service history, tune ups etc. Were the plugs replaced with MOTOCRAFT plugs? Need more info! Could be anything from plugs to wires or coil packs. Yes I said coil packs and wires the COP's ignition didn't come out on the 4.6L till 00. Is it throwing any cel codes?

The daughter's 03 F150 was doing a similar thing, acted like transmission and was a coil pack. Not sure after reading fordnut's post if the 99's had them or not.

Unless the coil is just dead, most seem to missfire while at a steady cruise or just light accelleration. The engine will seem to run fine most of the time. You can also force the miss by power braking the engine in gear, but dont do this for very long since it can really overheat the trans fluid. You will need a scan tool to determine which of the coils is failing.

I guess I could have given a little more info. It has 90, 000 miles. Not sure about the plugs. I bought it had about 40,000 and was told it had just been tuned up. I have had the transmission serviced twice since I bought it and keep the oil and filters changed. So I am sure its probably due for a tune up. coil packs could be the problem?

Have you had the pcm read to see if there are any miss-fire codes? Plugs and wires would be the first thing to do. Remember dielectric grease on the plug wire boots is your friend don't get any on the contact surfaces, it displaces moisture. If it has some miss-fire codes might try swapping the coil packs to see if the codes change that might point to the one acting up.

I think they build up resistance and if you accelerate hard there is enough juice to punch through it. Just my theory.
