I read in another forum that a guy used vinegar and water. He saturated his carpet with water, then used a spray bottle with 100% white vinegar. He sprayed it on the wet carpet then scrubbed with a stiff nylon brush, then rinsed well with water. He vacuumed afterwards, and when carpet was almost dry, he fluffed it up using the nylon brush. He said it turned out great. I tried it myself yesterday and it did work great.

I wonder if the vinegar would keep the neighborhood cats out of the boat? How did it smell when you were done?

Actually the only time I smelled the vinegar was when I was spraying it on. After rinsing, there was no vinegar smell to it. Pellet rifles keep the neighborhood cats out.
