Have mid 80's Johnson 175 that has lost port side spark. I've had this before years ago on a diff. brand eng. and am thinking it was the stator....Does that sound right ? Or could it be the power pack ( whatever the coil wires are running into on that side). Also the electric choke has quit working. Could there be some sort of short in the key wsitch that could cause a whole bank to loose fire ??? Thanks in advance !!!!

Can't loose power on only one bank due to a falty key. Can't happen, no way. Your CDI (aka switch box, ignition module,) is most likely out. Your choke may be due to a falty switch but mostly the connection or either the actual solenoid is bad. Highly doubt it if it is the stator causing the failing ign problem.

what yr and size engine?
sounds like a power pack went bad, there are 2 of them on most 80's johnsons.
not all that expensive to fix, check the 3 plugs that go to it too.
I had pins go bad on mine after a new pack was installed, 82 175 johnson.
think I paid about 65.00 for the pack.

I agree on the power pack being the problem. I have a 77 Johnson 175 and have had the exact same thing happen. Swith the packs and see if the problem moves to the other side. It might take 30 minutes to do and will answer the question for you. About 6 years ago one pack went bad and I replaced both of my powerpacks at once because they were only $55 each. I was surprised how much better my motor ran. I kept my old one that still worked as a spare in case I ever lose one and have to use it. I don't think I would even trust it now though.
