I don't have much experience with sunfish. I have always gone after the bigger stuff. Recently I have been targeting sunfish for a multi species contest I'm doing with a couple of family members. I was hoping somebody can help verify my latest additions to the contest. I think the first one might be a longear and the second one a green.

Your guesses appear to be accurate. The longear may be a hybrid, I'm used to seeing a pale outline around that earflap.

I wanna say either a Green or a Blue Gill. Don't worry there will someone on this forum who will positively identify it.

The second one is definitely a green. GSF have a black spot at the base of the anal fin near the caudal fin(tail) as well as the dorsal fin. The large mouth, orange border on the earflap and fins all point to GSF as well.

The first one looks like a longear but may be a longear hybrid. The elongated earflap is bordered by white and I found this: "Males are often bright orange or scarlet, and the head and fins usually have turquoise markings. Dorsal and anal fins, and their associated spines, are similar to those of redear sunfish." Seems to match to me.

1st pic: Orange Spotted x Bluegill w/bluegill dominant & maybe a longear grandparent.

2nd pic: Greenie (caudal fin orange/white border)

Your guesses look to be spot on to me. The first might be a longear X, but probably just a female longear. Nice catch.

Thanks a lot everybody for responding. I had a great time fishing for these. I'm going to have to dedicate a lot more time to sunfish. I can't wait until I find the larger ones.

1st one a longera, 2nd a green sunfish, no doubt about it. Altough the 1st pic may be a cross but has all the traits of a longear. Thanks for the pic's. Keep em coming.
