Good morning guys,
I am looking for some advice on catching some cats in the river at this time of the year. I am going to be headed down to Llano River next week with my brother in law and we are staying 7 nights on the river. We will be running some trotlines and throwlines. Anybody have any suggestions on how the fish will be moving or what will work best this time of year in the river. Any advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks Bobby

For runnin' lines, here's my Catfish Calendar for the next few days ahead which focuses mainly in on Blues (BC)& Yellows (YC). You want to bait out ahead of the days such as the evening before, or late evening as you head into those days. Also see the full Key & all of March 2011 (Comb thru the 2011 thread) at < http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/5657988/1> Blues also hit real good on the YC day, but not near as good as on BC days. If you know where you or others have caught some Yellows before, then concentrate hard on them on YC days with specific bait just for them. Same as with Blues on the BC days. Here's a little spread to assist: 10 BC | 11 ZIP | 12 ZIP 13 YC | 14 YC | 15 ZIP | 16 BC | 17 BFT | 18 BFT | 19 BFT 20 BC | 21 BC | 22 YC | 23 BFT 23rd is also a hidden YC day (what I call an overlap, or more so of an overlay as to its true definition). BFT is Buffet, which is an assortment. Usually I tend to catch more Channels on those days. On running lines concerning ZIP days, I usually run them in the morning & don't bait out until before dark or after to keep from wasting bait.

I grew up in Mason, TX and on the Llano..........we are staying and fishing about a mile east of the Hwy 87 Bridge close to where Beaver Creek runs into the river. Having the creek right there should help us keep an ample bait supply. I appreciate the help guys.

Fish in the mouth of the creek where it runs into the river. That would be a good place to rod n reel fish I would think +1 I have not fished there but the river will be similar in size. The water is pretty clear. During the day I would fish the creek mouth as stated and then I would fish in deeper water and above, especially if there is any structure(log, brush or rock pile). Late evening and night I would fish shallower in running water and the creek mouth. River cats are more active feeders at night especially in clear water, they hang with structure during the day and come out to feed late evening and night. When they are feeding, they go shallow where the food is. Hope this helps.

find scour holes or other changes in depth even if it is a small 3-4 ft depth change fish will hold there look for outside bends on the rock faces also look closely at where the water gets really shallow then drops off these type area will hold fish in a river year round any incoming water will also keep fish in the area good luck
fish to live and live to fish

I have fished the Llano for about 30 years now. Spent all my summers growing up paddleing up and down the river from the Hwy 87 bridge to Castell. As far as the catfishing it is not a great river. For the Guadalupe bass and perch it is good. For bait I would use perch or the spottail minnows that are prevalent in the river. You can use a seine or an umbrella net to catch as many minnows as you want. The river is real low right now and could make fishing pretty tough. I never really cared how good the fishing was if I was in such a beatiful part of the country.

Absolutely beautiful country! I have fished the south Llano river near Telegraph close to my deer lease. There was a large hole and it was 12' -14' deep at it's deepest and about 100 yds long. For the Llano river that is a huge hole. Put out a throw line with perch and caught a yellow about 25 lbs. We swam in this hole most of the time during summer. My wife and I spent many nights under the stars there....great memories.
