Looking at purchasing my first used boat. I am looking at a 2000 Procraft 165 with a 2001 90 hp Merc. Any idea what i should expect the top speed to be when I test drive it this weekend?

I have 17'6 Nitro with a 115 on it. My boat with a hydra foil will run 49 with just me. Add another person of same weight; 200 or so pounds, and I'm doin 43. My guess would be you'll probably run about 40 with just you. Add another person and you get 32 mph

Be careful with what you buy. Think of what waters you fish often. That has a lot to do with what you buy. The big rigs and large engines aren't just for the pros who want to haul butt. They are a tool. If you fish large lakes that get rough when the slightest wind picks up; you don't want to be out there in a 16 ft boat. Also the larger boats have larger fuel tanks and if you have a decent haul to get to your next spot your gonna need that engine and it's fuel reservoir. Just some things to think about. The small boat does have its upside. Easy to manuever. Replacement trolling motors are cheaper. Less tires on trailer to replace. Less gas each time you hit the pump;both in the boat and in the truck. List of both sides goes on and on, but like I said mine is a 17'6 with really good electronics. I would have no reason to get a larger boat other than I fish Amistad and Falcon a lot and it would be nice to shoot from spot to spot without beating my kidneys to death from the waves, or having to worry about whether I have enough fuel to make it back once I get to my spot.

Agreed. Maybe not even 40 with a full load. ( ice, full tank, full livewell, tackle, 2 fat guys, etc) But it'll get you there and back. I've never caught any fish going that fast, myself.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Now you guys have me worried. I have a 1997 16' 6" Sprint with a 90 Evenrude. Just me and half a tank of gas, I can only get 37-38 WOT on relatively calm water. About 5800 RPM. Should I be worried?
Put the plug in.

Probably not. I dont think that Sprint hull is known for speed, but you might want to ask Steve about your prop and set up.

a lot will depend on what prop/engine height/load. without more specific info I doubt any of us really know. check with steve www.stevescustomprops.com and he can give ya a ballpark speed probably.

My tracker V18 all-fish with 90 Optimax running with my wife and I and loaded with lots of tackle will run 38 tops at 5500, it jumps on plane instantly but tops out fast, I am sure that with a different prop I could get 45 out of it.
