I primarily fish for sand bass and like to tie a fly on above my lure. I was given a cheapy fly tying kit that should get the job done. I have made a couple of simple basic flys but want to learn more. I am also not sure that I am glueing or constructing the head right.

Where is a good place me to read the basic and some beginner fly tying methods.

thanks for the help

Steven

Head over to FAOL beginners tying section. If there is any way at all, come to Athens TX this Saturday to Fly Fish Texas. There will be hundreds of anglers and tyers there.

And never forget what a good friend Google is!

This thread http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...ook#Post3251801 has a lot of good books listed in it. Check the local library, you might find one or two. The Dewey Decimal number is 688.7_ . (Yes, there are still geeks that use the Dewey Decimal system. Can I get an Amen Dusty?)

TESTIFY, brother! smile (I haven't been in a library since I graduated.)

I'll second Robin's advice above about getting down to Athens this weekend. Yours truly, along with people actually qualified to do so, will be teaching beginning fly lashing at several times throughout the day.

If you can't make it down to Athens this weekend, then seek out a tier or two in your area. You'll be really shocked at some of the simple things you'll pick up by watching others' techniques and even their mistakes (that's the real reason they let me play with the beginners at Athens smile ).

Youtube is of course a good place to look for inspiration, but another TFF'er introduced us to http://www.theweeklyfly.com/ and their videos are great. The tiers spend a lot of time talking about why they use a certain technique or material and how to best handle it.

The best thing I did when I started was to pick one pattern and just tie it until I was happy with how it turned out. All vises come with several dozen really terrible flies that you have to tie out of them. Once a vise is broken in better, you'll find your flies look better too. smile

I'm heading down your way in a couple weeks. My sister is up from Frankston. They have land on Lake Palestine. I CAN NOT WAIT! This New York winter is killing me.

Hook up with the Dallas Fly Fishers. They do fly tying demos and lessons often. Membership has it's privileges!!!
