I just bought a boat that has a HB 997 at the console. I've always used Lowrance in the past and this is my 1st HB. SI works, but sonar / depth do not? Only depth reading I get is 0.8 or 0.9. I can hear a fast click from the transducer when the boat is on the trailer. Anyone have any troubleshooting tips? I'm clueless of where to start.

put it in the water? SORRY! i couldnt resist you might have a bad ducer. i believe there are 3 components inside that main transDUCER. Call humminbird, they are very nice to talk to.

Are you on plane running with no depth or idling around??? Does it have a shoot through hull puck and the Big SI/DI puck? If you have both, you may have an air pocket under the shoot through hull puck. Easy way to find out is pour a bucket of water in the hull where the puck is. If you get a depth reading, you have an air pocket between the puck and hull and you will need to remove it and redo it with 2 part epoxy. If that doesn't work then one of 2 things is bad, either the puck or the Y-cable. You can check the puck by removing it from the hull and hanging it over the side of the boat. If you get a depth reading the transducer is good. If you do not then the Y-Cable is suspect. You can also plug the SI/DI puck directly into the back of the unit eliminating the Y-Cable and check it while idling around. If you get a depth reading it is most likely the Y-Cable.

Not on plane. Idling around or sitting still with no depth reading. Actually depth switches between 0.8 - 0.9. Honestly, I don't know which ducer I have. I just bought this boat and have always been a Lowrance user. Thanks for the information. I'll try to find out exactly which ducer I have and try to eliminate the Y cable as the issue.

I think I found the issue. Followed the cables to the back. One goes to the SI puck. The other was routed down the side of the battery, under the battery, and back out the other side. After removing the cable from under the battery, kept pulling slack and finally, here comes the shoot thru puck. Looks like it has not been attached in some time. I'm not sure if the cable is damaged from the battery sitting on it. I do see the shielding and internal wire, but it's not cut all the way through. I guess I'll hang it over the side the next time I'm on the water and see if it works.
