I caught my first-ever warmouth this evening (on a roadrunner).
As far as fish go, it was nothing spectacular, but it's always fun to catch a new species.

Here's a drawing of a Warmouth from Texas Parks and Wildlife. They look a bit like a Rock Bass, but are actually a seperate species. ( I believe Rock Bass are very rare here. ) Congrats on the new species on the list Brett!

(Rock bass have red eyes, too, if I remember correctly). The body shape is like that of a green sunfish (longer than a bluegill's), but the mouth is not quite as big. Warmouth's have an incredible amount of color and patterns. It's almost like their Creator had a few extra camouflage patterns to use up, so they got a little of everything.

I was fishing lake Brownwood one time and had one come plumb out of the water to nail a 6" purple firetail worm I was shaking to get loose from a bush. Agressive little rascals.

I caught two this morning at Echo. I was using a shaky head jig where the bait screws directly onto the jig & you can TX rig it.
They nailed it as soon as it feel of a submerged car. Cool & spooky all at the same time.

The TPWD record for the body of water where I caught mine is only about 7 or 8 inches. Mine was about that long. I've seriously thought about getting my kids' names on the "body of water" records list. There are a few ponds and rivers around me that have only a handful of fish species with water-body records. So, for example, literally any-sized green sunfish someone caught could be a record. It'd be fun to take my kids fishing with the intent of saving any "record" fish so we can submit their catches as records. I'm sure they'd enjoy seeing their names on-line as record-holders.

I love to catch a big stump knocker! I used to catch them out of a gravel pit just north of Rockwall. They are tasty and fun to catch.

One of my favorite catching and eating fish when I was a kid in Indiana was rock bass or goggleeyes as we called them. Havent seen many warmouth or rock bass in Texas. Used to catch goggleeyes sitting on top a giant rock in the Tippecanoe River (Tippecanoe and Tyler Too to the hisory buffs) and dropping a worm on a hook over the side. They fought lots better than sunfish (bream to Texans, bluegills every where else). They made great filets breaded in cornmeal and fried in an iron skillet with french fries and cole slaw. MMMMMMMMMM good, thanks for the memories.
