It is not illegal to exceed the hull rating. The only problem is that you cannot fish most sanctioned tournaments because they have clauses about not allowing boats with motors exceeding CG ratings.

Maybe by your speedo, but not on a gps..... There is no way with a 90 HP that boat will run the speeds you are talking about, no way......Not unless it's got someone with a 250 dragging it behind......

you need to also make sure this won't effect the boats warranty. motors being different weights on the transom and such. and as pointed the only other problemm would be with tourneys and insurance.

nice looking boat. I have never purchased a new boat but have two questions.....if the plate says it is rated for xx hp's per the manufacturer, why would you get something over that rating?Doesn't the motors weight and HP drive the transom design?

I'd like to know if you can get insurance?

I wanted to put an 88HP Johnson on a boat rated for 85HP and my insurance company wouldn't insure it. And neither would the other companies I called

I had a 1996 Stratos 278DC, which is a 17'-6" fiberglass boat and it had a 130HP Evinrude on it. If I remember correctly, it was rated for up to a 150. I think the only 17'-6" boat Stratos makes now is the 176XT. I think it is only rated for a 90HP. Go figure.

Kingwood and Doug, I think he said 115, not a 90. And I am talking about the speedometer not GPS. I have a GPS and will check it out the next time out.

I'm not sure about the transom statements. It's confusing to me. I have a Charger and it has the 4 inch transom, same as the bigger boats but for my boat it only rates a 130 HP max. I have a 90 and it is way under powered. So if the transom is the same thickness why couldn't it hold a 150 HP????

I have a 17 foot Triton TR-17 with a 115 hp evinrude that is rated for 130. I've got it to 52 mph with me and my normal load and a small chop. Could maybe get 53-54 with a much lighter load, but mine would never go 60. The new hulls might be lighter though.

I have the Explorer 18 with 115 opitmax. I've gotten 56 mph and I'm thinking I could get more if I increased from a 22p laser to a 23p laser. Also, the motor is very fuel efficient.
