It may vary between makes but my f250 says you can shift into 4wd high at any speed and recommends not to use on dry hard surfaces.

I think it was probably just its time. If it was on snow and ice that shouldnt have hurt it at all. I thought about putting mine in, but didnt have any problems in 2 wheel so I drove like an old lady and left it alone. Hope the one from wht '04 fits, let us know.

Well...got the truck back yesterday..brand new transmission..100,000 mile warranty or 36 months....brand new transfer case 12,000 mile warranty...2 new drive shafts and u joints....ready to roll
