Hey guys,
I am new to this site and am glad I found it! I usually hang out on the saltwater forums and am a huge texashuntingforum dork. I figured there was probably a texasfishingforum so I typed it in and low and behold here I am.
As I mentioned I typically only fish the texas bays and backwaters but with the wife being prego I decided I probably need to take up some local fishing.
I remember fishing the local lakes when I was a kid with my dad and we had a blast therefore I am looking forward to geting back on these lakes.
Has the water warmed up enough for the reds to really start hitting? If not what temp does the warm typically need to be around here? What is the current temp? Also, i just bought some new downriggers and trying to get back in the swing of things. Its been 20 years since i last used one. Any help on how to fish them probably would be great. How far back to run lines? How deep to run the baits. Does it depend on wheere the fish are schooling or do they typically hit "x" feet off the bottom or top, etc. also i rember we would use tony acetta pet spoons back n the day are these still working today? Any help or pointers would be grealty appreciated. As I mentioned my wife is prego so my fishing partner is out for awhile. I hope to meet some new fishing buddies that are looking to have a good time and good company in the boat.

Well it will still be a couple months for the redfish to start heating up. But during the summer months we downrig about 12 foot down and try to find the schools of fish on the depth finder. In the summer the fish wont go deeper than 25-30 feet. We usually have the best luck with different colored rattle traps and swimbaits. Just try a bunch of different things and see what works best. Also we have had luck throwing shrimp on the bottom in some of our own hot spots at night and sometimes catch 50 redfish in one night. Also fishing on the wall with shrimp or live bait works well to. In the mean time we catfish these lakes right now and even the stripers are hot in the spring months. Hope this somewhat helps. This is all for Calaveras of course. We dont fish Braunig but may start this year.

Channels and Blues are good on Cally and Braunig also. Use cut shad or Big Marvs cheese bait. The cats usually bite good through out the year. Oh yea Welcome to Texas Fishing Forum.

Thanks guys for the info. I appreciate it. Also, have any of you guys had any look finding fishing partners in the "partners" forum? I am relativley new to San Antonio (well grew up around here but left for a long time and now back) and do not know many folks around here. With my wife being out pregnant I will be fishing by myself and I am really looking for someone to fish with. I have good boat and love to fish. Just looking for someone to fish with. Thanks again folks.
Oh and "Gizzard" that fish in my signature was catch at Bruaning, I guess the nuclear radation is getting to'em after all. Just kidding it was catch out of Stika Alaska. That was one of the smallest ones. We caught a 240lb that day but our camera ran out of batteries. Just my luck! Happy Fishing. Thanks for the welcome.

welcome

You can leave your largemouth bass gear at home!! Although, I have been known to flip the reeds in these lakes from time to time when I am bored and don't have enough time to get to Choke! I am determined to find a few bass this year!

Sure wish they would restock these lakes with bass and do something about the tilapia!

Sig,
Welcome back and if your looking for a fishing buddy let me know. I'm new to the area as well so can't really offer alot of info on "hot spots" other than a nice little Creek for bream fishing. grin

Sig6060...My family loved catching halibut in Alaska, but did you ever salmon fish in the summer? Best fishing I've ever done in my life

Redfish, Yes sir, Alaska salmon fishing is "fishing at its finest". I love Alaska. I hope to go back and visit soon and as often as possible.
