I have procrastinating on replacing my front outdoor faucet. It this DIY job or what. What tools do I need and what are some things to be cautious about. Some people said it is as simple as screwing it off and screwing a new on. Some people say it might welded on. I have got quotes from plumbers ranging from $250 to $650. Please help!

Why are you replacing it? Depending on the age of the house, it's probably not screwed on, it's probably soldered onto the pipe.

Why not just re-build it?

That's why I was asking why he was replacing it...replacing the gaskets/seals would be much easier, unless something happened to the actual faucet body making it necessary to replace it.

Mine screw right off--from right to left, as I recall. It helps to have a wrench long enough to get a little leverage. They're so cheap I've never bothered trying to repair one. Don't forget to turn off the water at the main beforehand.

Usually sill faucets are threaded. Most you must chip around the mortar (if its a brick house) and put a wrench on the male adapter on the backside, and use another wrench to turn the faucet. You should be able to do it yourself.

If it's threaded,

You need to get ahold of the pipe with a vise-grip behind the faucet, use a crescent on the faucet, lefty loosin. Turn water off at the street first, by the way. Use teflon or pipe dope on the threads when installing the new one. reinstall. Caulk around the faucet with clear caulk. They are normally 1/2 threaded. Good luck

Newer homes will usually have freeze proof faucets which are soldered on. Just replace washers till it totally goes bad.

When I cut the faucet on, water come out the base of the faucet and then seeps through the creep holes in the brick. I am not sure if it is the seal or what.

How old is your house? Mine was built in 2003. I am trying to figure out if this is plumbing standards by then.

turn the water off, put a wrench on the valve body and on the outside nut. loosen nut and screw out valve stem. if it is 6 or so inches long or longer it is a freeze proof faucet and is more than likely screwed on. might as well change the washer while your there. if you gently try to unscrew the hose bib, be careful cause the copper will twist very easily.

Do as tom says, Also sounds as though it has frozen and busted the pipe up inside of the wall, I have fixed two of them in the last week, They don;t drain out like they say they will and when they bust , water comes out up inside the wall,

What's on the backside of it? If it's sheetrock might be worth cutting a small hole to see if it's threaded. If it's not and you put a wrench on it you can twist the 90 off then $650 will be a cheap fix. Post a pic we need to see if it's a frostproof or silcock.

This is the exact thing that is going on with my neighbors faucet tonight. Went to water the shrubs and water starts coming out of the weepholes. House is a year old.
