Grandbury has a good striped bass population if that is your home lake. A medium heavy rod with fast to med action will do just fine. You need a good sturdy reel, I dunno what your preference is for spinning or baitcaster but I'd go with a heavier spinning reel. 20# big game mono is the line I would use on it. Trolling is gonna be your best bet. Troll a stripper spoon, or jig. Or if you wanna use live bait drift fish with live shad or at least fresh dead shad on a three way rig with your bait up fairly high off the bottom. This might get you some nice cats as well as as stripers.
Look for fairly deep water off of points, or over or around humps in deep waters.
Good luck, man!
What kinda kayak did you get?

The tailraces below PK, Granbury, and Whitney are all good bets for stripers. Live gizzard shad freelined or fished on bottom work well for me. Good Luck!

I like catching stripers in the brazos. gizzard shad, bream, and large minnows are good bait. Trout works great too (just kidding its illegal!) But it does work great.

You probably will not have that problem at Granbury. No hybrids except what have swam down as escapees from the PK hatchery.

My favorite rod for stripers is an ugly stick. Any fish you catch on an ugly stick is an awesome fighter.

I was under the impression there was no bag limit or size limit, so if you caught one and just happened to not notice it on a heavy action rod and a striper ate it, what can ya do? lol, but no seriously Im not the most knowledgeable on freshwater, but I thought since it had no size limit you could use it as bait.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Trout are not legal bait in Texas:
Quoting from:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/fish/definitions/

"Bait: Something used to lure any wildlife resource. It is unlawful to use game fish or any part thereof as bait."

And on down that same page you will see that trout both sea and fresh water are Game fish.
Also there is a bag limit on fresh water trout, it is 5:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/fish/limits_freshwater/

While Red drum is on the list of game fish, fresh water Drum (Gasper Goo) is not, as Sunfish (all of the Perches) are not either.

Note also another common misunderstanding, the limit on Bass including Large Mouth, Small Mouth, Spotted and Guadalupe is a total of 5 in ANY combination.

As far as telling the difference between Stripers and Hybrids the size limit is the same for both. Minimum 18" with no max. The problem is telling the difference between White Bass and Hybrids, since the size limit on White Bass is 10". So if the fish is over 18" long it doesn't matter, but if the fish is between 10" and under 18" you need to make sure it is a White Bass and not a Hybrid. You can be assured there are Stripers, White Bass and Hybrids between PK and Ganbury. And the possibility exist for Hybrids to exist in any body of water which contains Stripers and White Bass.

Striper:

Hybrid:

20" Hybrid (top) and 18" White bass (bottom):

Note that the linearity of stripe pattern is not a reliable indicator as to whether it is a Striper or Hybrid.

Stripers and Hybrids tend to have darker Stripes and more than the center striper will continue to the tail. Whereas White Bass have a single stripe that continues to the tail and the stripes tend to be less distinct. White Bass have a single rear tongue patch whereas both Stripers and Hybrids have a double rear tongue patch.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/wbass_diagrams.phtml

Once you have seen these different tongue patches you will have no difficulty recognizing it again.
