I had a post a while back about the trip we are going on for spring break. My dad has a reservation for the KOA on the North Llano River. Anyone fished it this time of year? I'm guessing it has everything but is there any info you guys have on it? Thanks! We are also staying at BigBend right on there Rio Grande, has anyone fished there as well? All help and info appreciated!

The same flies that you use in your area for river bassin, should work just as well on the Llano.
It's more than the catfish would do.

I have stayed there once. The river looked a little slower and cloudier. I have also been lead to believe that there are very few public access points to the North Fork. KOA rented canoes, but did not offer any shuttle service. I guess you could float from the KOA down to the city park or Morgan Shaydee. But, you would have to prepared to shuttle the canoe back, yourself. Anyway, I would love to know more about it. And if you do go, please be sure to let us know how it goes. And be sure to try the local BBQ. I love Cooper's brisket. And I think they make Cabrito on Sundays. Lumley's is in town. It seems to be most popular with the locals. Me and the wife like'em both.

The S Llano is mucho better for fishing. You can access it at the state park and bank/wade fish it. Stay away from the yankee (Coopers ) BBQ. Lumley's is Texas style BBQ (and about half the price of Coopers).

Thank you brother Hamon The barbecue heads up is equally important as the fishing one!

Stay away from the yankee (Coopers ) BBQ. Glad I'm not the only one who isn't on the Cooper's bandwagon. Maybe I should give it another shot, but the time I went it was not even average BBQ and to be avoided if you've ever actually smoked your own brisket. I'm thinking they use beef clod and not actual brisket.

Being a BBQ cooker I understand what folks do to accomplish the results I taste. They soak their briskets in vinegar just like the folks N of the Mason Dixon line. Then there's the sauce that is as thin as water and sour like vinegar. The real turn off is the $$$

I've had Coopers for the first two times in as many weeks and I could say that I would never seek it out again. It was edible, just no really BBQ to me.
It's more than the catfish would do.

I was once a Cooopers fan but have fallen off the band wagon. Derik and I ate at there New Braunsfels location and they were trying to pass off what looked and tasted like pot roast as brisket. No thanks, I'll stick to Rudy's or Opies in Spicewood.

Yall and I will have to agree to disagree. The Cooper's in Junction is the only location still owned by the Cooper family. And I think their brisket is delicious. Lumley's is great too. But, I would pick Lumley's because the sides are nicer, not because I thought the BBQ was better...
I have stood outside and watched'em load the pits at Cooper's in Junction. It's just as "Texas" as anybody else. I've eaten at Coopers in Llano, Kruez, Blacks, Schmidty's in Lockhart, Luling City Market, Salt lick in Driftwood, etc... Cooper's in Junction is just as "Texan" as any of them.
Anyway, you can be like everybody else and fish the South Fork. I've done it several times. Or, you can be adventurous and try the North Fork of the Llano. I encourage you to try the North Fork. If it is no good, you can be in the South Fork in less than 30 minutes. And if it turns out to be good, you will have done something and know something few others do.
Just my opinion...

I hear the Subway in Llano is good. What's the Llano as a whole like with regard to flow and clarity this year? I've looked at the USGS flow gauges for Junction ( http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=08150000) and Llano( http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=08151500) which both seem to indicate that flows are a bit above half of the median. Will this make the fishing tougher on the Llano, easier or just different?

They do have "pits" just like all the others in Texas but that doesn't make it Texas BBQ.
The N Llano is good if it has any water flowing through it. The S Llano always has water and for some reason the N doesn't.
If you're at the KOA in Junction you can easily try them both.

It's settled. I'm from Texas, I know Texas BBQ, Coopers is not Texas BBQ. As far as the rivers are concerned, I like both. I've had better success on the South vs. the North.
