Went to the Miller creek bridge today. I have a question - where is all of that foul smelling water coming from, on the NE corner? (Opposite corner from the parking lot)
The little ditch right there at the bridge was flowing like crazy and smelled gawdaful! Since the sewage plant is on the other side, I was wondering what it was.
If I should go to meet my maker, please don't let my wife sell my fishing gear for what she thinks I spent on it!

Maybe someone used it as a rest room. I always put in there, and I have never smelled anything in there...

Maybe someone used it as a rest room. I always put in there, and I have never smelled anything in there... This across the creek from the "dirt ramp". It was making a "muddy" plume 50ft long (You could see the cloudiness on the other side of the bridge) that covered half the creek. You couldn't see a chartuse jig 5 inches under. Smelled like the east fork when the water is low, only 10x stronger. It definitely wasn't construction run-off or anything. It definitely wasn't plain old muddy water either. I've been in outhouses that smelled better. Guides I am not trying to step on toes, I just want to know. I have no vested interest, financial or other, for making this post, ohter than "what am I eating?" If anyone does know - you can PM me if you don't want to post. I looked on Google maps, and can't see why any natural reason why just that one ditch has so much water flowing in it. Somebody is dumping water, sure ain't from the rain. Other side (dirt ramp) was only slightly damp. I saw a 20" water main break once and there was more water than that flowing in the ditch. It would have taken a 36" pipe to carry that much water under natural pressure.

After going back again, and looking at what is going on, I think they are cutting back on the effluent discharge on the west side of the swamp so they can work on the DART construction, and pumping it over to the east side. It think it is overwhelming the swamp settling basin and effluent is running down to the Miller bridge, which is acting like a dam and sending effluent down that ditch. Called Rowlette Creek WWTP 972-205-3210 and they took a report and will check it out. If you see nasty water flowing you may want to call them too. The effluent from Garlands Wastewater Treatment Plant flows through a NTMWD man- made, 1,840-acre (7.4 km2) wetland. This provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of birds and reduces the sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of the water to a drinkable level. [/quote]

I just think as fishermen and ladies it is up to us to pay attention and check what is going on out there. I'm not worried about the smell as much as what the nitrates/phosphates do to the creek and river, not to mention the bacterial levels. Turns out Rowlette WWTP was unaware of the issue. I spoke to the plant operator who sent a crew out to verify. They are planning on correcting it ASAP. Turns out they don't overlook "a little smell" either, especially when it is sh8t running into the drinking water supply. So good thing I didn't take your advice.

could be a crapie situation It seems that way! That's a good catch if it's really something that shouldn't be going on....that creek has enough trash in it, I don't need any more "special sauce" going in there.

Lol I noticed the smell, I just thought it was that big puddle of mud by the parking lot. Glad you did the research and found out, it had become annoying. Thanks hopefully they will find a quick solution

Thank you Vern for taking up some of you personal time and putting in the EXTRA effort alerting the proper authorities and calling attention to the problem so they can get it taken care of. I guess if you would not have done that RC AND Ray Hubbard might have been contaminated with some ecoli or some other sewage germ and there might have been some sick people as well as sick fish. Once again THANKS for being alert.

Vern, you are right. It should be a concern of every outdoorsman/woman. There is not enough money in the coffers for someone to be out keeping tabs on this sort of thing on a constant basis. There was a water main leaking in the creek I tend to spend my winters in. It leaked for 2-3 years. The first time I came up on it I was tubing right next to it and it looked like something real big was swirling right next to me. Scared the bejeebers out of me. I didn't really think about what it might be other than water coming in from an underground source at the time. Finally reported it and it turned out to be a break in a major water line. Then I saw it on the news and they said that it had only been leaking 6 weeks or so. Well, it had been reported 6 weeks prior to that, but it had leaked for a long time. I just finally figured it out because I was walking by a big valve just above it some time later. These waterways are getting all sorts of pressure. Trash, loads of broken off mono, braid, and flourcarbon lines, as well as people ignoring the land owners. What people need to understand is that these areas are prescious resources. It is up to all of us to do whatever we can to keep them prescious.
