i'll try to be as brief as possible..my fishing buddy/partner has and 05 ranger/hpdi combo..running the mobile delta the other day and engine starts knocking and has power loss. takes to shop and guess what, bad piston(s)/power head and 7k+ to fix. problem is this motor only has 130 hours on it and most in the lower mid to middle rpm range.its been METICULOUSLY maintained and he has run the correct oils etc...dilemma..does he trust a reworked hpdi or does he buy a new motor? i have an interest as this boat will be mine in two years..does he have any recourse with yamaha? out of warranty but 130hours?????????? ( already posted on bbc)

good engine.

just needs to be run harder. outboards are made to idle and WFO!!

yamaha most likely won't do anything. too far out of warranty.

steve, thanks for the quick reply....second thought is how reliable will a rebuild be assuming the tech knows his stuff or should we hold out for a new power head from yamaha?

Mine blew in 06 and yamaha replaced the powerhead under warranty. It has run strong since. Most 2 strokes dont like being run slow. It is best to get those rpms up and dont lug around. I switched from yamalube and ringfree and now i run quicksilver premium plus and seafoam and i feel like the engine runs smoother. I also have a lot less carbon on my plugs when i check them.

Also i would check with Hydrotech and see what they can repair the engine for.

What do you mean "its been meticulously maintained"? What service had been done? Was it done by a certified Yamaha mechanic? What kind of oil and additives were used? Did the gas used have any ethanol? Was an anti-ethanol additive used?

from what i hear, that motor is having a lot of power head issues. there must be a lot of people not maintaining there motors properly smile

i would get ahold of yamaha and plead your case. it seems to be a common problem. never know, they might replace it b/c of all the problems.
