I see most people will run a chart speed around 5 to match their boat speed. Do you ever go faster then this when you are trying to learn a lake or find fish quickly? Never tried it myself as I am still learning but was curious if it works and how well.

The fastest I will go with my 997 is 5 mph. I set my chart speed to that as well.

If you go 60 you won't see any detail to scroll back to.

The fastest speeds for good imaging involve the transducer location. If it is on a jackplate or similar level, you have to go slow enough to prevent water turbulence so the air bubbles and swirling water won't distort the image.
If you have the transducer at the bottom of the hull, then a faster speed is OK. 5 mph with a matching screen scroll speed is nominal. Slower is better since the scan beams will be on a particular location longer which will give sharper images.

Thanks much! I usually go 5 mph and it's mounted on the hull. Guess I will keep it around there

i think you can go faster and get detail if you reduce your side range and drive closer to the structure your looking at. i normally run between 3 and 5 out to 120'
