Im lookin into buyin a unit for my canoe. I aint ever used one, let alone bought one. I'm lookin for some suggestions on a cheaper model that still works decent, i've read good things about the eagle cuda 300 and the humminbird 160. Does anyone have any experience with either of these. Also would it be all right to mount the ducer inside or would it be best to mount it outside, it is a fiberglass canoe. Last question, should i get a portable unit? Dont really wanna spend more than $150 on it

if you can i would recommend getting at least a dual beam what ever brand. Iv heard better things about hummingbird than cuda, but havnt used either personally. Mounting the ducer inside is fine, but you need to have it outside to read correct water temps. So its a completely reliable inside mount with no temps, or temps with a chance of knocking it off if you hit something. Your choice and mostly depends on where you plan on fishing.

I have the 170 by hummingbird and i like it a lot. It has the dual beams as well. Easy to read, now that i understand it better, was very easy to install as well. look up my post and find the one about my FF and it will show you pictures of what it looks like in action.

Both unit will work great. I have owned both ( and many of their siblings).
Watch the sale ads and focus on high resolution and color. Get both if you can. Easier to read and see.
If you use a dual or quad beam, make your epoxy "puddle" rise as high up on the ducer as possible and wider the footprint of it on the yak also.
Good luck , Phill

I've got the 160, which is dual beam. My PBG came with a transducer already mounted, so I don't know which one it is, but the unit itself worked flawlessly this past weekend, Ran for 6 hours off of 8-AA batteries without a sign of low charge.
