In my housing development we have a small one acre pond that some of us have stocked with Crappie/Catfish/Bass...I was walking my dog yesterday and low and behold I must have seen 12 Water Moccassins...As kids fish this pond often, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions on trapping them....I have to say the community would not allow me to shoot them with my 22 but wasnt sure what other ways to get them....

Anyone have anyother suggestions?

How about a high-powered pellet gun? At close range, and with a little luck, you might be able to take 'em out. You'd have to beware of ricochets, though.

i would just wait till they are out there and hit em with the 22, as they are just kids they shouldn't be able to run very fast.

Aww, man! You beat me to it. I wish I'd spotted that sooner.

Are you sure they are actually Water Moccassins? There are several species of water snakes that are very common to our area that are totally harmless, but often confused with moccassins.

Starless, You are right. 97 % of the snakes I see around local lakes and ponds are water snakes. Most are harmless but be careful picking up the Diamondback variety. Those mothers bite hard!! Oh yeah they get 6' long and will scare the chit out of you when they slither out under your feet walking the bank.
Water Moc's are much more common east and south of Dallas.

My friend and i use to trap them with a snake trap. It's a little cage with a small hole in one end. I think you can get them a trade days. I'd try that cause you ain't gotta shoot them.

Actually, You might check with your housing development and have them purchase some geese. They will eat the hell out of the snakes. Plus it will give the development some added wildlife.

Get one of those kids to step on one...if you see that the inside of its' mouth is white, it's a moccassin.
