OK..Dumb questions. We are staying on LBJ for the winter (black bass fishing has been ok, and is picking up). I see (and smell) all kinds of wildlife but I'm surprised...Why am I not seeing any frogs or racoons (road kill or alive?)???
Just curious.
Thanks
It ain't the catchin', it's the fishin'!!!

OK....I get the frogs and winter...70 degree winters are fine wkith me and I really don't care if the frogs hibernate or not....but...I don't think I've seen a dead coon on the road since I came thru Kansas. Normally in NE (Yeah, NE. Gotta be from someplace) they are all over the roads.
You do have the market cornered on skunks...and that's fine. hahaha
Thanks for the welcome...we have fallen in love with Texas...at least in the winter.

don't be deceived. it was 0-5 deg in DFW last week..... I know, I know. A heatwave by Nebraska standards, but its a killer here. I live on the edge of suburbia, & I see 'em dead all the time. not like 1 every mile, but at least 2 a day. I drive a lot, though. what really is wierd, is 14 years ago when I moved to DFW there were armadillos EVERYWHERE. now I barely see any dead ones, let alone alive.... Welcome to Texas! I felt the same way when I finally got here!

Texas coons have learned to look both ways before crossing the road. Sadly our armadillos have not. MO

All the road kill started disappearing when the Chinese Restaurants opened on every street corner.

Having grown up in the 50's and 60's when road kill was plentiful, here is my take on what's happened to the numbers of Armadillo's Racoons and Rabbits and other various road kill over the years.
Most the the hill country back in the late fifties and early 60's used to be dominated by large sheep and goat ranchers who raised them for their wool as well as other livestock.
Preditors had an easy meal compared to those fast moving wild critters that seemed to flourish because of being fleet of foot, and the armadillo got a pass because of the more tasty morsels of a young lamb or goat were abundant for the pickings.
Throw in the fact that we didn't have major six lane hwys that divided the countryside and all the developement that came with it.
Add in the fact that those sheep and goat ranchers figured out they were getting too old, and couldn't run the ranch anymore and their kids saw dollar signs when they found they could sub divide those ranches and build houses on the hill tops and the sheep and goat ranchers eventually went away, and that left only those fleet footed little critters that once got a pass, now are the main food staple for coyotes, bobcats, mountain lion, eagles and owls, as well as several million car tires, it kind of put a crimp on their numbers and population.
Thus the decline of road kill in Texas!
Just one more cast!
