Okay looks like I am going to bite the bullet and get a SI unit, HDS8 or the 998c Si are what I am trying to decide on.

Anyone with experience with either or perhaps BOTH, please chime in and give me the low down on each.

Thanks!

Avoid Lowrance like the plague. Search the forum and notice the amount of people that are having issues with the HDS units. HB customer service is top notch. Lowrance no longer has anything resembling customer service. BTW, I have an 1197 and love it. Awesome graph!

I looked at both brands' SI for about two months before I picked one. Decided that the HDS had a clearer picture. So, I have an HDS and love it; no complaints. Never had a problem with Lowrance in the past either. Customer service had no bearing on my decision, I got what I thought was the best product.

Humminbird. Fewer problems. Free download of upgrades. Best cusotmer service in the business AND, we have a Humminbird expert/pro-staffer in the General Equipment Section named Doug Vahrenberg who is immensely helpful!

Customer service is back at lowrance. They just sent me a brand new HDS5 for free in exchange for a Lowrance 520 that was 5 years old. The service used to be terrible but is A level again. I have an HDS10 as well with no issues at all.

Go demo both of them and go with what you like. I think you are comparing two great products and can't go wrong. Of course when any one has a problem with a product you are going to hear them talking about it on the internet. That is human nature these days. You do not hear about how well they perform for the million other people that use them every day.

I have a 997 but I am not bias. I prefer it but that is only because I have gotten use to it and it seems to work great for me.

from what i have seen the lowrance has a better picture but then you have to also buy the structure scan for it.

Hummingbird has to be better. I saw the guys from Ax Men using it on last nights show to locate old logs that sunk 100 years ago.
