I'm with you barker definitely sharp shin. Do you have a bird feeder in your back yard ? If so he is probabaly waiting for some dinner to show up. Bird feeders are like brush piles to us.He's just waitin for some birds to show up for his dinner.

It's either a Sharp Shin or a Coopers and yes if you have a bird feeder he is there for lunch.

spider, I can't post photos but go online and look at some photos of a Sharp Shin, Coopers and Red-Shouldered Hawk and get back to me.

Your right according to the pictures it would be a red shouldered hawk. Coopers and sharp shin do not have the yellow on their peak in the same design as the bird in the 1st picture, but are small hawks also.

They also have pronounced bars across their tail feathers as part of their identification and this bird does not.

it's NOT a Coopers Hawk. Look at the wings, look at the tail, look at the eyes and look at the shape of the head. It's 100% a Red Shouldered Hawk.
