Do all the rules still apply.Like lighter line lets it sink more faster.Or they two different set of rules,depending on the reel,which connects to a different kind of rods,etc.

theres really no vs. between spinning and casting reels ,they are both equal when it comes to bass fishing just each is more suited to different styles and techniques .casting lighter baits and lighter lines ,skipping and shooting docks and cover , fishing deep water dropping baits straight down casting baits in the wind the right spinning reels paired up with the right rods make these techniques easier and more efficient... heavy lines and bigger baits ,fishing ,flipping or pitching heavy cover, horseing big bass to the boat, more control throwing medium to heavy spinnerbaits and crankbaits atleast for me make casting reels my choice for these techniques. your style might vary from that a bit ,but all said both of these rod and reel combos have an equal place in bass fishing

I can't use a casting reel worth a damn, always end up birds nesting the line.

go out in your front or back yard tighten down the line brake knob to where your bait or weight doesnt just free fall to the ground and overrun in the reel .make it where you have to shake your rod to get it to fall and practice casting at a plate or target , dont worry about distance at first just get a fluid casting motion going,then loosen the brake up a bit and do it some more till you get good and confident with it and then loosen it up a bit more but never loosen it to the point that the bait just free falls and overruns the line in the reel, just to the point where your bait falls slow. when i was a kid and bought my first ambassador 4600 i did just that till i got good enough to take it fishing and not birdnest it even though i still would every once in a while . i would go out in my front yard and practice, cause the back yard wasnt open enough . i remember id be out there practicing and people would drive by and laugh at me and say hey you catchin anything or say look at that dumba$$ fishin in his front yard. but heck i didnt care i just wanted to get good at casting it and not fight backlash everytime i went fishing. buti will say i do use my spinning setups just as much as my casting, totaly depends on what techniques im doing at the time.

I always end up with tangled line and a mess when using spinning rods. I hate spinning outfits. I have 2 of them, but I have 12-15 baitcasters. I use the spinning rods only to cast very light lures, where I don't expect to catch anything big. They don't call them fairy wands for nothing.
Did I say that I dislike spinning outfits?

Casting reels - once you're good at casting them they are awesome. Pinpoint accuracy, you can cast a mile, and imho they handle big fish better. But they don't cast well at all against the wind and of course there is the bird nest factor, it's gonna happen.
Spinning reels - Handles lighter lures better, cast a mile, no serious birdnests. But they do have a tendency to tangle far back on the spool during the retrieve. Line also has a tendency to wrap around the rod tip for some reason, maybe because it's mounted under.
I like them both equally. My question is why can't anyone make a quality spincast reel?

Same rules apply. It's about preference. The only reason I started buying baitcasters is due to the grief I caught from guys in the club calling my stuff "kiddie poles" and feeling that there might be some advantage. Now that I have addition thousands of dollars in gear I admit that I like my spinning gear best. I catch 50 inch bull reds with my shimano spinning reels and my biggest bags in the bass world have come off of spinning tackle.

It's the old adage- different strokes for different folks. I find I spend more time fishing and less time cursing with spinning rods, because 85% of the time I fish, it's windy or im squeezing casts under docks.

Zebco makes a fair 'Spincast', Omega03 I think, about $60+, got my wife one, loaded it with 15 pound braid, and shes as good as it gets,...

Thanks for the tip Jim Sr., I'll check that out.I keep a few spincast around for kids and novices that come over and fish. For beginners they're a lost easier to use than spinning reels, just push the button and let 'er rip. Back in the day the Zebco 33 was good for that but nowadays they're junk.

never use spinning reels unless i'm casting very light lures/finesse stuff or fishing for small fish like whitebass/rainbow trout or crappie.

for bass and other similar sized fish, i feel like a baitcasting reel gives you more power/control over the fish.
