The more you use the DSI you get to know what your really looking at with out having to dive on it..
Those are walleyes schooled up with one stragler just on a rock sand transition....
The weeds are just a good tall standing weeds, good pike weeds... not the best water clarity the weed line ends at 11 feet...
The DSI performance compared to the LSS is very good! Its not as crisp but with out spending double the money to get imagery, I'm impressed with the 650 price tag.....

easier to draw arrows..... The DSI imagery is better than 2D sonar.... Here are a couple shots to compare what you would see from 2D to down scan on the LSS... Really no need for 2D unless you down rigger fish.....

Jason is your first pic in 2d mode or down image mode? looks like traditional sonar arches of that school of fish. just want to make sure I know what I'm looking at.
thx DSI mode. Elite 5 DSI doesn't do 2d sonar just Down Scan. Ok thanks. If your ground speed was faster than 0 mph, say idle around 3 mph or so, would the fish still appear as arches or would they appear more like the structure scan images? sorry if this is confusing. thx again

Chris Meyer do you know at what speed you were traveling at when you got the 2nd and 3rd images of those trees? closer to idle around 3 or sitting still at 0 mph? or even faster? good pics and what unit are you using? hds8?
thx

I was going Idle speed when I got them....
The image on the HDS with LSS should be better.....
HDS8 with LSS is $2300 Elite 5DSI is $650...........
Now that being said for the guy who wants to get into the imagery and doesn't want to spend the bank that Elite DSI is the best sonar I've seen on the water in the under $1000 price point. It doesn't take a sonar guy to figure out what he's looking at trees, weeds, rocks, or fish.....

Chris you are comparing a hd8and lss. A more fair comparison would be a hd5 and lss for about $1200. and with that you get SI I guess I was expecting a little more pic quality out of the unit

maybe a another good question for Jason or others, does the screen resolution for the different units make that big a difference,,,i notice the elite 5-dsi and hds-5 have 480x480 and the hds-8 has the 640x480,,,does the hds-5 have as crisp a picture in di mode as the elite 5 or the hds-8?

Vertical pixels are what makes the difference. Both have 480 vertical pixels. 640 horizontal pixels is due to the wider screen of the HDS8. Split the screen on the 8 and you have two 320x480 screens.

basscatmark; I have the HDS5 with LSS and it is awesome, I also have the sirius weather radar module which is very useful to. The screen on the 5 is small but it still gives a great screen shot of what is exactly below you or out to either side of you. I have found sunken boats, tire reefs, feed troff's, tables, gates, chairs. It is unreal what you will see, cars, etc.. Not to mention the ability to mark way points on a creek with the side imaging without having to zig-zag back and forth over it. For the price it is well worth it, but if you can afford it get an HDS 7 or 8 or better yet the 10. You will be satisfied. I know that I am and have had it since it came out.
