Just purchased a Hotmaps Premium South edition from BP and Navionics has included free updates for a year. What I didn't realize was they also gave a free PC application with the PC maps, both for free. The file to update the chip was over 960 MB which was identical in size to the PC maps, so apparently they downloaded the entire file to the chip. It was a slow download. The first thing I did was go to Fork and see how much detail was there. This was my first Navionics chip so I don't have anything to compare, but it seemed to have a lot of blank space on the lake. I had expected the blanks based on the TFF chat, but it seemed to be more than I thought. They do show the river and creek channels in a pink colored line which I think is a new feature. I suppose it is unlikely that they will add any more detail this year.
BTW, thanks to the TFF for all the great information that is getting me updated in the latest techniques and equipment.

I'd heard that there was some legal issues that Navionics went through and that they had to put LESS detail into the newer chips for whatever reason. I've not researched this topic all that much but maybe someone on here can chime in. Believe the older chips, 2009 and earlier, have greater detail. I'm getting ready to purchase another chip for a newly purchased graph so I'd like to know the story as well.

Here is some info I found about the various Navionics chips. I can't vouch for the credibility of the author and the information he puts out but he sounds legit.... Navionics 101

How do you update your Hotmaps Premium South. I purchased it in January, registered it, but do not see anything on Navionics website about updates. Did the update go on the SD card that includes the Premium South maps.
If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

I updated by going to their website and into the webstore. Download the chart updater with your chip in the computer card reader. It will recognize the card and provide you options for updating. But you will need to download the chart updating program. BTW, the chip update is S L O W...

I haven't been very impressed with my 2010 I purchased in September.
