Im not a bass fishing expert so I was hoping you guys could help me out a little. Im fishing next weekend and would like to know what baits you would use to target fish given the current cold conditions last week and this week? If I were to throw a crank bait what color would you use and what kind? Would that even be a useful bait this time of year? All ideas are welcome. I have never fished for bass this time of year.

Glad to help. A lot of fish are caught this time of year on moving baits...that would include crankbaits w bills and the lipless type also, plus spinnerbaits. These baits will draw reaction bites and you should try to bump all these baits off of something...that's when yoy'll get bit. But, should you not get any action fishing that way, rig up a Tx rig worm or my favorite the Yamamoto Senko fished weedless with a 5/O EWG hook and slow down...I've been fishing hard since 1970 and I'm just learning to fish slow...let your bait hit bottom and don't move it for as long as you can stand it...then don't hop it, make a natural looking move with your bait....twitch it sooo lightly...after a minute pick another target. JMO...Good Luck!

i use a craw or red color watermelon red flake usually works really well for plastics, rayburn red for cranks or traps, or almost any red color this time of year

In the Senko I have the most confidence in the 5" watermelon/blk/red. For the crankbaits you should get a couple of 1/2 oz red eyed shad from StrikeKing in the orange/red color, then the new line from Academy has quality ceankbaits and I would recommend square billed 1.5' and a 3-5'. Chartruse belly with brown back is a proven color. I love to order from the tacklewarehouse online...shipping is free over $50 order. You should also buy a few packs of Berkley 10" Power Worms...good colors are Bluefleck, Black, Junebug. Fish the Red Eyed Shad like a worm...let it fall to the bottom, then sweep it and let it fall back to the bottom. Or experiment with it at different water depths but always use the sweep/pause retreive or any retreive except slow and steady.

Where are you fishing? Water temps can make a lot of difference on what to use. Pretty good range of water temps depending on what area you are in.

LOP is not one of the lakes I fish (its a long ways off from the San Antonio area). I use to fish Fork a lot and I would think it would fish similar as far as the type of baits used. I would try a Jig in a fairly heavy weight so I could get it deep. Also a crankbait (I like the darker backs with white or sorta pearl sides). I would get the crankbait as deep as I could and fish it slow with start stop retrieves. Never can rule out various soft plastics. I have caught a lot of good fish during the winter on baby brush hogs and other creature baits.

Just my thoughts..................

This is how I would approach any lake in the north Texas area this time of year. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyJu7HQwnA4

What kind of line is a good all around line to use for the crank baits?
