Hypothermia, drowning, PFDs, no PFDs, whatever......

This is a terrible accident and my thoughts are with all of those involved.

Stay safe everyone.

I don't say this to be funny and I feel terrible whenever there are unnecessary deaths that make it hard on the family and survivors, often for years.

I spent years fishing very cold spring waters in the north and on Lake Superior. Our policy was to always wear life preservers regardless of limited chances of survival. There was always a chance that rescue could be done before hypothermia claimed you and if it did the body could be found and make it easier for the family for closure and collection of life insurance, and that was not said in jest.

Catching a fish is great. Riding there on your bike just makes it better.

Hypothermia is survivable... drowning, not so much.

YOU DROWN FOR A REASON, here is one reason!

serving my country in the U.S. Coast Guard i have seen plenty of deaths on the water, hypothermia can be survivable but....... Many of the fatal boating accidents occur in the "out-of-season" months when the water is cold. What happens to the body when suddenly plunged into cold water?

The first hazards to contend with are panic and shock. The initial shock can place severe strain on the body, producing instant cardiac arrest.Immersion in cold water can quickly numb the extremities to the point of uselessness.

Nate, good post . I think anyone who doesn't understand this is endangering people with uninformed opinion.

This was some of my brother-in-law's family.
Here is the email I received from my sister after she found out..

Good morning everyone,
Please keep Scot's family in your prayers this week. We received some tragic news this morning, Scot's cousin Melody Cook and her husband, Kyle went to Lake JB Thomas yesterday to check a trot line they had set out a few days ago. Kyle's son Kevin and his pregnant wife Erin were with them. Something happened and the boat turned over putting all of them into the water, very cold water after this weeks weather. Kevin got his wife to shore and tried to revive her but was unable. He went back for the others (300 feet offshore) and was able to get his dad back to shore. They could see Melody swimming and yelled to her to keep coming. Kevin was able to run to the highway and get a car to stop to call for help. Melody never made it to shore, they just recovered her body this morning. Erin also died. Kyle is in an ICU at Lubbock and Kevin is home with his young son trying to explain to him why his mom won't be home.
The family is in the process of trying to plan services for this week now, and we are all in shock. Melody and Scot still had regular contact, he and the boys went over to Stanton pretty regularly to buy hay from them. Please say some prayers as you go about your day today that somehow we can get through this really rough week to come.

Thank you,
Stacy
