Looking to take a weekend trip in a couple weeks and was wondering where I should take the family for some good fishing. I am looking at bastrop or Fayette lake since the water temps should be warmer. I have never been to either so am looking for input from the forum here on which one I should go to. Thanks in advance.

I'd go to Fayette since I've caught better numbers there than I have in Bastrop, but both are really good.

I live about 30 miles from both. For me, potentially larger fish on Fayette greater numbers of fish on Bastrop. Family trip go to Bastrop. Easier to get out of wind and fish with the kids if necessary and easier to catch lots of fish.

If it's sunny, go to Bastrop. If it's overcast, go to Fayette. Trust me...

Fishing should be great right now at both.
Bastrop has nice cabins for about $40 a night that are a good compromise between camping/hotel. They have heat/ac and bunkbeds and picnic table with a fire ring outside. You can pull your boat right up to the shore by your cabin and plug your boat in overnight with an extension cord (you'll need about 100 footer) Great family accomodations. For #s of fish, I tend to do better at Bastrop.
I like Fayette too, but not if it's windy.
+1 on being close to town. Bastrop has everything you need to keep you busy if you're not fishing.

bastrop just got closed due to a oil spill till further notice. They have to wait for some contractors to come from dallas to fix the oil leak.

I was going to take the family down there today. Last night after hooking up the boat and getting all the stuff together, I thought I would check TFF for an update of fishing it, but found it was closed. What luck! Saved some gas and time. Guess I will try the smallmouth at Belton instead.

Hope they get it cleaned up soon. Was planning a couple days fishing there next week. Might just go to Fayette then if it's not windy.

bastrop is good on spinnersbaits in the grass right now- my choice would be Fayette for sure though, especially this time of year.

BASTROP (KXAN) - Lake Bastrop is closed to recreation while the Lower Colorado River Authority cleans up a 450 gallon oil spill.

LCRA spokesperson Clara Tuma said a tube in the cooling system at the Sim Gideon power plant broke Thursday, causing the leak of lubricating oil. The oil is used to grease a turbine at the power plant.

The agency is now using booms in the water and absorbent materials along the shore to try to contain all the oil that spilled. Tuma says the LCRA does not anticipate any negative impact to wildlife or plants in the lake.

Lake Bastrop will be closed to swimmers, boaters and fishermen until the LCRA is satisfied with the clean-up results. The parks surrounding the lake, however, are still open for recreation.

I wonder how long it will be closed? I know it took BP nearly 6 months to fix their mess up int the gulf, but 450 gallons is not as much..... I wonder if their will be a fish kill due to this?
