This morning is a prime example of why I will ALWAYS have a 4x4 truck. When I got off work at 5am and had to drive 40 miles home in the blowing ice and snow, I put it in 4 high and breathed a sigh of releif as I passed car after car in the ditch. With a 2 wheel drive truck you have no weight on the rear axle and have a very hard time maintaining traction in the ice and wet roads. I may only use it like that a couple times a year, but those few times more than pay the difference in my mind. Been watching the news off and on all day and seen a few 4x4 being pulled buy chain and spinning backwards as well. Just like driving a boat in bad wind has to do with the driver as much or more than the equipment. The best thing a person can do when it's this bad is if you don't have to then don't drive in this carp. In the past I've had to since 1975 seen this a few times more than I would like. In a 2wd service truck make sure you have some weight distibuted over the rear axle which wasn't a problem as I usually carried 400lbs of refrigerant 90% of the time as well as oxy/act rig and spare tanks. Now, just pick up some 60lb bags of sand at Home Depot (knew I forgot something yesterday ). They were showing a guy in a rock crawler on the news earlier helping to tow folks but that might be a little more of an air-ish ride with the wind 40mph and 17 degees oat, even with 100mph bps and a couple of pair of thermals wheu I already look like the michelin man. Folks be careful out there.

I've had 4 4WD's and there have been plenty of times that I needed them, but that was when I lived up in Yankee Country. After I got rid of the last one, I decided if it was bad enough to need 4wd it was too bad to be out anyway. Then I had a few slippery boat ramps, and a couple of times I had trouble backing my boat into the driveway at the lake house due to of all things too dry a road and just kicking up dust and not being able to get enough traction. Then I decided to buy a diesel and they are so heavy in the front end that they get stuck on wet grass. I'm glad I got it in my current Dodge Mega Cab 2500, diesel, but the bottom line is most times you don't need it. But, the few times you do, your glad you got it. The development I live in while I'm in Florida on a temporary assignment has sand roads, and I've had to pull several out of the sand.

I have been thankful for my 4x4 all week and will be driving it in to work again tomorrow. Whether it is it worth the extra expense depends on where you are in life financially. When I was young and poor I could not afford to keep one as a daily driver. Now that I can afford one I would not be without it. The truck still does not protect you from the ignorance of other drivers on icy roads though...Watch out for them 18 wheelers !

When that guy in front of you in the 2wd spins out and has a wreck, you are just as stuck as he is.
