ive been throwing the Scooter jig for almost 2 years. Invented by Accent Fishing...free range hook system. Chompers and Gene Larew have put out versions this year so people will be talking more about them. I prefer the Scooter cause I can fish with or w/o skirt. Totally weedless you can rig any of your favorite plastics on it....its real versatile. if you fish shakyhead, texas rig, swim jig, dragn a football head flipn heavy cover its got it all covered all while being weedless and not having to worry about fish throwing your jig...you wont believe how great it is for bedding fish....the free range hook allows for your plastic trailers to float off the bottom for easy inhaling! www.fishaccent.comwww.jaseoutdoors.com

This has been a great post for me and the veteran feedback means a lot. I've caught fish on different kinds of jigs, but now have a much better feel for which jig to use in a certain situation. The discussion of weight of jig and water depth has also been invaluable.
I've been fishing Lockhart Jigs and also have a lot of the old Penetrator Jigs from Weedless Lures, Inc. I recently bought some Talon jigs for deep structure fishing, but haven't had the chance to try them out - looking forward to that in May.
How many of you use jigs for night fishing? Randy Oldfield realy likes jigs at night on Fork. Do any of you fish deeper struture at night in months like May?

what rods do you guys that fish them all the time like the best For pitching a 3/8 jig I use a Powell 704 and a Dobyns 705 Champion series. For throwing 3/4 football jigs and 3/4 pitching jigs(when stroking a jig) I use a Powell 735 and a Dobyns 736. I use a 6-1 gear ratio reel on all of them.

Instead of just taking only jigs with you on a trip to learn how to fish them I would approach the situation a little differently. If you have confidence in a Tx. rig, take it and another rod rigged up with a jig. When you are getting bit on the tx. rig your confidence in that area is high and you know the fish are there so then switch to the jig and pretend you are still fishing the tx. rig and watch the size of the fish go up.

I agree that you should know that there are fish there and that you can catch them. I would never say to learn to fish one on a new body of water. When I read that article years ago I went to a local lake that I knew well and fished it with a jig till I got bit. Little did I know I was getting bit just did not know it! Cant tell you how many big bass I have caught since that felt like a wad of moss! Missed a pile too. I fish a 1/4 to 3/8 90% of the time but will throw a 1/2 in 10+ water. I'm a heavy cover jig guy, so flipping jigs are my most used. Really only change the trailer as need unless the water is super clear. I love the jig and will fish it anywhere. Have caught bass from Texas to North Dakota on it and many states in between. It's my goto bait on the tough days for sure! Though I will fish many ways to catch them!

Nearly every technique I ever learned early on I learned at a pond that was loaded with bass. It really will build Ur confidence quickly.

Its too simple to fish a jig...drag,hop,swim....And most people want to make it too complicated.Tie one on and fish it and you will catch fish.

Great info for us Jig Dummies. One question, what type of rubber is best for jigs? I have some that stick together and fall apart and some don't. What is the difference?

Most jigs now use silicone skirt material and it shouldn't stick together. Some make jigs with round rubber but I don't think the new stuff sticks together either. The old flat rubber that was used on jigs and spinnerbaits long ago used to stick together at times.
