I've been using the palomar tied very carefully with lots of lubrication with good success. It seems that the trilene and uni knots both would do a fair amount of "burning" the line causing breakoffs. Am I just tying them wrong?

The San Diego Jam doesn't have the line in a position to "cut itself" like a palomar does.

I tie a palomar 95% of the time. And have no problems if tied correctly
San Diego jam the other 5% of the time

I tie the Palomar 95% of the time and Snell the hook on the other 5%.
I just looked up the San deigo jam knot and it looks really good.

I just looked up the San Diego Jam knot and it looks really good. imo, the SDJ clinches with less friction and does not slip. The SDJ is hard to tie wrong once you get it down. Most folks I talk to swear by the Palomar. I would also bet that many have never tried the SDJ. I use both the SDJ and Palomar but use the SDJ most of the time. Use whatever knot you are comfortable with and very adept at tying and clinch up effectively without burning the line.

Improved cinch knot beat the palamer knot every time when we tied two swivels together. Broke at the knot on the polymer everytime.
