www.utmostenterprises.com the blanks i use are the batson e-glass one piece blanks, #'s SPG-601,720, and 780. these are the ultralight 5 foot, 6 foot, and 6'6" blanks. The best one in my opinion is the 5 foot blank but all three have a strong butt with a soft tip-p-

What if I took say a 7-8 foot 2 or 3 weight blank and built it as an UL spinning rod. It would be long for chunking light lures and bait, it would be really "soft" so the fight of the fish would be increased and it would give you the over all feel of an UL rod.
Anyone ever tried this or think it may work? I built some of my favorite spinning rods with fly rod blanks. They work like a champ, especially for casting delicate baits. They can cast a long way without slinging the bait off the hook. They also do a great job of protecting 2-6 lb line with their action and that makes a big difference in the number of hits compared to heavier line. Go for it!

Pearow, I have been learning rod building and I was wondering how those reel seats work on your rods you built?

I have a love my 7' BPS MicroLight UL spinning rod. Fast action, and enough backbone for landing 10lb carp!

I am going to try a new experiment.
Several years ago (say 20) I built a 10 foot panfish rod using a glass fly rod blank. It was never satisfactory. I put a spincast handle on it and used an ultra light reel. I could cast a lighter jig on any of my shorter UL rigs.
I just ordered an HT 10 foot graphite rod. I am going to put a Spincast handle and a Diawa ultra light reel on the rod blank. It should be a great Bluegill rig if the rod has the right action. I will let the group know when it comes and I have tested it.
In the meantime my Bass Pro Shop 4'6" ultra light rod is the best Bluegill rod ever.

I could cast a lighter jig on any of my shorter UL rigs. Probably true. The beauty of a longer rod comes in casting baits that will sling off the hook if you cast them hard. A shorter rod requires a smaller casting arc and that means a higher acceleration and more stress on the bait. If that's a jig, no problem. A longer rod has a much larger casting arc and the acceleration and stress on the bait is lower to get the same speed, which is better on nightcrawlers, minnows, and other soft baits. Think of it as lobbing a bait instead of casting a lure.

BPS has TFO spinning rods UL thru H for 100.00. Same warranty as their fly-rods and designed by G. Loomis. Bought a light 6.6' and it does small sandies (6"-9")well.

I use a 7'6" UL BPS Microlite, and a 7' UL Gander Tournament Pro.
The Gander Mtn rod is fantastic for $60. I hate the little short UL rods that you mostly see for sale...you can't throw a jig and bobber or live bait on a bobber that is set very deep. I can throw either on the 7'6" or 7' rod that is up to 7 or 8 feet deep...without having to throw it on a slip bobber with a knot/bobber stopper in my line.
