Why were you in 4 wheel? Were you on dry pavement? Your transfer case is probably smoked if you were travelling at any speed at all, on dry or even wet pavement. 4 wheel drive is not meant to be used on dry or even wet pavement. It's meant to be engaged where there is slippage. My wife's cousin had to use her 4wd to get through some mud at their place and when she got on the pavement she tried to put it in 2 wheel, and didn't get it in, so she drove it in 4 wheel and within 10 miles she did the same thing as you and it was smoked.

I've run 4wd on every vehicle I've ever owned at highway speeds in slick conditions and never had an issue.

try turning the key on without starting the truck then turn the knob back to 2 wheel drive, it may take several attempts, but dont start the truck until the indicator lite quit's flashing. i've had this happen a couple times on my 06 w/auto

keep us informed I have an 05 4x4 5.9 and been running in 4wd all week.....its on icy roads and probably didn't get above 40mph....may have been lucky but no issues here......good luck with it.

My advice to all that are running in 4wd just cause the road is slick is to read your owner's manual.....
