Yeah, but you used to be able to shoot 5 deer a day. Or as many as you could find, 365 days a year. There were no limits and no closed seasons. Those days are long gone for the deer. It didn't happen overnight- it was phased in over many decades.

I can foresee a day when bass limits go to 1 a day, or even a few tags a year. Probably not in my lifetime, but maybe in my grandkids'. Actions we take today will determine how quickly that day is upon us.

When was it legal to deer hunt 365 days a year? And what type of weapons were being used slingshots?

Saturday I took my youngest son to Lake Alvarado and when we arrive a guy asked if I had any good scales which I said yes I have a digital one and he asked if I would weigh a fish he thought might go 5 lbs but his scales said 4 but he thought it would go more. I agreed to weigh the fish which weighed 9.1 on my digital scales. The man thanked me and put the fish back into the livewell and finished tieing down his boat and said this will be a good meal tonite and drove off. I practice catch and release as wekk does my son who saw rthis and he replied dad that man did wrong. I told him in our opinion he did yes ,but it was his choice not ours.My son said froom now on we will weigh a fish if asked but first the person must promise to release the fish back to which I was happy my son does see the impiotance of catch and release.

If the fish was truly a 9 lber, what would have been the difference between mounting and eating the fish? Fiberglass mounts look just as good as the real thing. That said, sometimes I think we carry the catch and release thing a bit too far. My father in Law lives on a small lake that is the perfect lake to teach someone how to bass fish on. Virtually every place there is structure on the lake, you can catch bass on. The problem is, to my knowledge, no one has ever caught a bass over about 12 inches long. I personally think the fish need to be harvested for awhile to allow some fish to grow up. I too practice catch and release on Bass, but quite frankly one of the reasons I almost always release my fish, is because Bass is not on my list of great eating fish.

is the problem that when there is alot of small fish they fight over the bait fish and can't get fat? But with fewer fish they can gorge on the bait therefor getting fat? Don't all big trophy fish have to start out as small 2lb'ers first? So by keeping that 2lb'er your preventing it from getting trophy.. or no?

A three pounder makes for a perfect portion of bass for dinner for one adult, multiply that by the # of diners and there you go. Catch 'em that day and eat that night, and dont stick anything in the freezer...

My opinion on catch and release doesn't mean squat but here it is anyway - it has it's place but we do tend to get carried away with it - I've been fishing Fayette County for a long time - the slot there was designed to produce trophy bass and by rights it should work - unfortunately due to catch and release habits of todays bass fisherman hardly any LMB are harvested at all and I have watched the size and catch rate of bass both fall on that particular fishery (in my opinion) as a direct result of catch and release.

If someone is within the TPWD regulations, then the argument is pretty much closed. If the fish population needed a reduction in bag limits or adjustments to slot lengths, I am sure TPWD will make the appropriate changes. Of course anyone practicing conservation over and above TPWD regulations is free to do so, but they should not expect all to follow and certainly they have no right to chastise others who do not practice their form of conservation.

Well right after he caught it he put it in his fish basket and immediately a guy starts harassing him about keeping the fish. His argument was the fish should have been put back because people guide and fish tournaments on the lake. Of course the guy that caught the fish told him he was going to keep the fish. Well to make along story short the guy that caught the fish went to use the restroom as soon as he left the older guy went and released the guys fish. The guy gets back and I honestly thought he was going to open a can of woop arse up on the old man; but instead he just packed his stuff up and left, after a few choice words. If any of you on the forum fished the Ft. Sam Houston Rec. Area between 2003-2005 you probably know who the older gentleman was he would harass any one that kept a lmb.

that ol man is lucky he wasn't "released" into the lake too!

FISH ON!!
