Hopefully I will be back home this summer. I don't get to the coast as often as I used to or would like to. I would like to sling some lures for reds, trout and flounder when I get home. Can anyone tell me when and where I can find some clear saltwater on the TX coast? The clearer, the better. I like to fish the crystal clear waters in the Hill Country and I would like to see how my skills stack-up against the fish in the brine. I know it's very different from CenTex waters, but I would still like to give it a try.

I would also like to know what tackle and lures yall would suggest when fishing in clearer waters. Rods, reels, line, lures, etc... Not asking for anyone's secrets, just a point into the right direction. Thanks for the help in advance yall!

Oh yeah, would like to wade or fish from shore, but I do have access to a small skiff. Thanks again!

Look at times when the surf gets calm. You weren't very specific on the texas coast as to what areas you fish. I like using 7' medium action casting or popping rods with the older green curados. They are excellent reels and you can pick them up for about 75 bucks in really good condition. As far as lines go all I use is power pro braided line or suffix mono. I have absolutely no complaints about either one. Lures...... 1/8 to 1/4 oz jighead with rootbeer chartreuse, texas roach, glow white with chartreuse tail, white and red trout assassins...... anything like that. Same colors in Deadly dudlys with 1/8 oz jigheads. Corkys are prolly the best suspending bait in my opinion but work them very very slow......... that is my .02. Oh yea...... and for flounder a newpenny guld or the bright green and orange one on a jighead worked slowly bouncing it off of the bottom...... Thats what I do and have had sucess. Oh and always keep a coupl of spoons with you

I would say around the Galveston area (although I've never personally seen any clear water around there) and anywhere within 100 miles of Corpus Christi. When you use braid, do you tie on a leader? Mono or Fluro? Thanks for the feedback. Any additional replies would be greatly appreciated.

Gotta head south pards...further you go, the clearer it'll get. And not having a boat to access the back lakes and other spots that get clear will make it probably rockport before you find "clear" water....

**HINT** super clear doesn't hold as many fish as green water does.

Galveston gets clear alot you just have to hit it right. I go to www.galveston.com/webcams and you can see the condition of the surf.... they have 4 or 5 cameras on it. I usually use a 15 to 20lb flourocarbon leader about 18" long.

Look for days with very light winds after a northern has passed through.

From Port O'connor and points south will have clear water. The farther south the clearer it gets. Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, CC Bay, Port Mansfield and Port Isabel/S. Padre Is.

The key is wind and rainfall. Wind stirs up the water and rainfall washes sediment into the bays and infuses massive amounts of freshwater.

Like Pat said, green water will hold more fish than clear water.

When fishing the surf green water is preferable to clear water and a little wave action is better than none. If it's too rough with brown water then probably won't be as good either. Look for the happy medium of mild surf and green water.
