Most sunfish species around here are semi active year round, only this time of year they'll be deep and sluggish. They start coming onto the shallows around march and the spawn starts in mid spring and continues through summer. I'd say they are most active in the summer.

I agree with Pondbass. The summer time seems to be the most active time for the Sunnies. Their bite is more aggressive and they are easier to find during the summer. You can also find em in the shallows and on tree lines. However if you can find em deep you can get some really big ones during the winter.

They are most active pre and post spawn in the months that they do spawn. Sunfish (especially small ones) have a pretty high metabolism, so they have to eat a lot of big and small snacks through out the day. The coldest winter days does slow that metabolism down some. The hottest summer days can have the same effect if there is not enough dissolved oxygen in the water body. I specifically feel like my best chance for catching trophy bream are a couple of weeks before the first spawn and couple weeks after the first spawn. After that, a few days before and after each full moon is considered by most bream anglers to be prime time for feeding activity. Hope this helps.
