This was caught at Lavon lake on sunday. It came up in an old cast net that I snagged off the bottom. We put him the pait bucket and he revived. It is about 4 inches long. No one on the bank could ID it. thanks KYLE http://www.anglerschat.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3204&stc=1&d=1296526941

Thanks guys....
I have to go with "General Consensus" for 100 Alex and go with ...log perch.
A quick google search shows them to be most common up north near Minnesota. Little dude must have swam a long way.
or probably was an aquarium cast off but who knows?
Granted, I have only been fishing at Lavon for twenty years (my dad much much more) and we "thought" that we had caught everything that lavon had to offer.
But that is what is so cool about fishing....never know what you will find on the end of the line....
I have snagged rods and reels....most too trashed but one was a damn near new Curado on an All-Star rod....that still had the plastic over the cork!
Pulled up many a log with damn near new lures on them.
Even pulled up a really old and rusted handgun...a little .22 or .25 revolver. The grips had long rotted away.
We carefully put it into a plastic bag and took it in to the Wylie PD and they just looked at us and said "What in hell do you think we are going to with that?!"
Granted...it was VERY trashed and covered with green slime and mud, but trying to be a good citizen and all, we thought that the freaking police department would have shown a little more interest in a gun found a the bottom of the lake!
I guess that is what you get from watching too many CSI reruns.
Thanks for the ID assist fellas, cheers, kyle

I caught some of those in a castnet at Benbrook last year. I sent a photo to TPWD biologists thinking I had found some freaky invasive species or something. The biologist got right back to me and said it was a Texas Log Perch and they are native to our waters. They do make pretty good catfish bait by the way.

Actually, the various species of Logperch are a Native Texas fish. Of which there are several species including the Logperch (Percina caprodes), as well as the Bigscale Logperch (Percina macrolepida), and of course the Texas Logperch. ( Percina carbonaria). They're surprisingly common in Texas, but because they're so small and rarely caught by anglers, most people don't even realize they exist. Let alone that they're find in the vast majority of Texas waters. Logperch are among the few "true" perches that are found in Texas. As the fish most commonly called perch in TX are actually various types of Sunfish. You're probably thinking of other Perches, such as the Yellow Perch, and the Walleye, which are more common up north. However they are found in a few areas in Texas like Lake Meridith which has breeding populations of both those species.
