I've crappie fished a place on Lake Eufaula over 30 years. Never followed the water temps, but I use tax day - April 15 - as the peak of the crappie spawn. You can give or take a week on that day some years. The lakes in the DFW area are probably about 3 weeks ahead of Eufaula.
If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

Here is my take on the spawning period.
Once the water temp gets to the upper 50's, 57 to 59. The males will slowly start moving up into the shallows. When the water temps get to around the mid 60's the females will move up. When the water reaches 67 or higher the spawn should be in full swing. Note I am talking steady temps, meaning just because the temp gets up one day does not mean the crappie spawn is on. Warmer nights where the water water temps don't drop much is a huge plus. At the beginning of the spawn the evenings will always be more productive than the mornings because the water temps will reach its highest point in the afternoon. Once the crappie are commited to the spawn both mornings and evenings are great.
You have 3 main areas of the spawn. Creeks, coves and the main lake areas. Crappie will move in to spawn in that order. Upper creeks will warm up first followed by coves and then the main lake. Once the spawn is about over in the creeks you can still catch them spawning in coves and off the main lake.
With a normal spring if you can say there is one in north Texas, The spawning process should start the 1st part of March and run to the 1st part of May.
There are many other helpful things to know to catch crappie during the spawn. All of reach I teach on my spawn fishing seminar trips the first few weeks of March. These were a big hit last year and I received some great feedback from some of my customers that went on the trips. You can visit my web site for more info.
I personally can't wait tell spring gets here.
Cliff

our son usually plans a tawakoni visit during spring break and does pretty well
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

it depends on the lake, on texoma the fish are still fairly deep over spring break, and usually wont spawn until the beginning of the second week in april. on the smaller lakes im sure you could do fine, just watch the water temps, and prefish the area. it all depends on overnight temps and snowfall. if we dont have any snow, and the overnight temps are in the 50s for a while i say go for it.

What would be a good place to wade for them around North Dallas The cat tails at the east end of the Hwy 66 bridge at rockwall is good when they turn on. the rocks all along the dykes will also do well with a jig 4' under a slip float and you can walk for miles of those rocks at different places around the lake. the reeds behind Collin Park Marina on Lavon is also pretty good.

Spawn usually runs March - May on most Texas lakes with April being prime time.

march is still too early on north texas lakes, and a good spot is any area with button willows that are in a foot or so of water.

I have also found that the harder the bottom is the better spawning area it makes. I like to find clay bottoms with thick brush.
