I have a 93' 35hp Mercury motor.
I've been out to Rockwall Marine twice already and they are just way too far for me. I took my boat to them both times for the same thing, spend hundreds on it and it still has the same problem of dying on me while running open. Kinda scary.

We have replaced the fuel line, and gas tanks, water pump and other stuff too. I have new spark plugs also. I can't figure it out.
Anyone know of a place closer to McKinney that I could have someone take a look at it?

Spanky's is too far the other direction so what else you got?

I tried him before. I'm too far for him to go without getting charged for the travel and such. I would take my boat to him but that's also too far too. I would rather have someone near me or in Lewisville I think. If all else fails, I may take it to Spanky's and spend the day at Cabelas or something.

You got the vents open on the tanks while runnin? Sounds like the vacum on the tanks is holdin back the fuel.Does it start up and run good for awhile after it dies? If so, that would be the vacum releasin pressure.Im not much of a mechanic, but I've had that happen to me and other friends.

I would think Rockwall would be the place I would be taking it back to. From all I've heard about them they have a great reputation for fixing motor problems. If I had that kind of money invested I think I'd take it back. jim

Vents are open on the tanks. Rockwall fixed my dad's cajun and had that up and running for cheap. I hear they are really great on boats but I've driven there twice to get this same problem and both times they told me it was fixed and when I hit the lake and run wide the motor starts sputtering and just dies on me.

Lucky for me it doesn't cause a backwash into the back of my boat when it does this but it's annoying having to lay down on the throttle when on the lake. It's also now starting to die on me when I'm not running wide but at half speed.

I just don't want to drive another 2 hours round trip to take it to Rockwall and them tell me it's fixed for another couple or more hundred dollars and then have this issue happen again.

Can't help you with a mechanic since I live in the Central Tx. area, but I have several suggestions for you to check out. If the motor dies instantly without sputtering or slowing down, I would suspect an electric problem. Electric problem could be: 1) bad kill switch or loose connection to kill switch 2)loose ground wire on the power pack or faulty power pack 3)electric component over heating--check for discoloration on the electric components 4) electric wire has rubbed and goes to ground when running.

If the motor slows or sputters prior to shutting off, I would suspect a fuel issue. Possible fuel issues: 1) Fuel pump is bad or has a leak 2)There is an air leak in the fuel line from the tank to the carbuator--tighten all fuel line fittings and check your primer bulb. Some fuel system have a check valve in the fuel line that could be sticking 3) Fuel filter could be clogged or have a small amount of debri 4) bad fuel (water), suggest using Stabil fuel additive 5)If you notice fuel leak around the carbuator, check for a loose fitting on carbuator. If carbuator has a screw at the bottom of the fuel bowl, remove screw and pump your primer buld to flush fuel bowl from debri.

Does the warrning buzzer go off before it shuts off?

These are some of the things I have found over the years. Call me at 512-863-2650 if you want to discuss my suggestions

Call Ben at Lake Park Marine in Lewisville. 972-436-8422. He's on 35E just before you get to the 35 bridge on the lake.

If your running it agian and it quits on ya check the pump bulb to see if it's sucked flat..If that is the case change the fuel line bulb. also a larger fuel line maybe of help...don't buy the ones for boats go get it by the foot at the autozone, the uel line for cars lasts 10 times longer than marine lines before they get stiff from the alcohol in fuel..good luck

If it is just dying instantly . like someone flipping a light switch, I would look for an electrical problem, an ignition switch going bad, a coil wire grounding out, man overboard switch, something along those lines. Most motors are set up ecectrically, to run without anything being " turned on " so to speak, in other words, you can jump a motor off at the starter, and if it has fuel going to it, it will run, the motor is killed, by grounding the ignition, so I bet, something is shorting to ground intermittantly and you dont have a fuel problem. my 70 johnson was doing that, and it turned out that one of the coil pack wires was shorting to ground.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Try going onto iboats forums they are fantastic. They have forums for different brand motors so it is more specific. They have helped me to diagnose things myself and save a ton of money. I had taken mine to 2 shops and still had same problem after spending money. My boat was sputtering, dying on me alot, and then started bogging down. It ended up being the diaprahm in the fuel pump, the part cost me a whole $4 and then took me only 10 minutes to replace.
