Started the old motor in the drive way today with the ears and it was idling high. First time I have started it this year since probably August. Any suggestions, I am very limited in motor knowledge, so my best bet would be to take it in. Been a while since I have had it serviced, what could something like this run me at a shop?

Could be several things. The first thing you might do, is tell us what engine, model, year and HP.

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

1993 Johnson 150 V6 Silver Star Series. I can only assume that it is the original motor. Boat is a 1993 Javelin 379. I bought it used 10 or so years ago. Only other problem I have had is the rings on lower unit went out 6 years ago. Been a solid boat for me.

Was your fast idle lever pulled up or possibly stuck?

Pull the cowling and look for obstruction around throttle linkage, like mud dobber nest.

+1

My Merc did this one time while on the lake. It was one of the oil injection hoses.

I'd track down along the throttle cable, first.

Yep. If none there....then take a pic of the linkage, etc and post it here.

And the timer base -- make sure the spark advance rod is pulling it back to its idle position.

Does your motor have the quick-start feature? If so the port side temp switch will have a black/white wire (in addition to the tan wire). Disconnect the black/white wire at the connector, and ground it to the cylinder head, see if it makes a difference. If your powerpack has a yellow/red wire comming from the start solenoid, disconnect that as well.
