We pull all types of trailers up to 18k. We have a 95 F 350 crew cab 7.3, about 195,000 miles. Automatic transmission from Brian,s Truck Shop, other than that it is all stock. We also have 2 F 250 Super Duty 4x4, V10 trucks with manual transmissions. We don't own any of them for their mpg, but their ability to hook up to anything and get down the road. Other than replacing the auto transmission on the 7.3 we have had excellent service out of it. It will outrun both V10 rigs from a standing start. We bought it to pull the heavy trailers and it is great. I have never owned a stock automatic that survived our service until we got Brian's to build one for us.

I got 330,000 on my '97 7.3L Power Stroke Crew Cab 4x4 F250 & I get 17.5-18 mpg daily driving over 100 round trip miles to & from work. Hauling a 8000# tractor & 20' trailer 750 miles back from Louisiana averaged 16.5 mpg running 60-65 mph. That old 7.3 is hard as heck to beat.
One of these days I'm going to Land the BIG ONE!!

I had a 3500 dually with a gas 454 it would pull anything I put behind it just not that fast and you could see the fuel guage going down. I went to a f250 and I am much happier with towing but have had all the problems with my 6.0. And I changed the coolant when I got it . 7.3 is the best just my .02

If the oil cooler was already clogged, swapping coolant doesn't help at all. Some people swear by Restore to break up all the crud but I think its even limited.

As others have mentioned, stay away from the 6.0L Ford. The engine in my 2006 (90K miles) is setting on the floor at the Ford dealers shop with blown head gaskets, bad EGR cooler, bad oil cooler, and 3 bad injectors. Very fortunate that I had one month of warranty left. In typical Ford fashion, they refuse to replace the other 5 injectors because they haven't failed yet. Scares me to think of owning this truck after the warranty expires next month.

What ticks me off is they KNOW its the coolant clogging the oil coolers and aren't doing anything about it.
The oil cooler kills the egr cooler which kills the head gaskets. They almost always go at the same time. If you have a 6.0l you should really monitor your coolant and oil temps.

If you want good fuel mileage go with a cummins up to an 02 model. 7.3 powerstroke would also be a good choice. I wouldn't get a 03 and up cummins or 6.0 powerstroke or duramax unless it had a warranty. If the travel trailer is the biggest load you are going to haul a chevy 6.0 would probably work, but your fuel milage would not be good.

My son has a 2500HD 6.0 Auto....he is borrowing my one ton cummins this weekend to pull to Cedar Creek for a tourney, because of fuel prices...that old 5.9 is a sipper compared to that 6.0 gasser....that thing is horrible with a load behind it
