Hey folks!
Recently rediscovered how much I LOVE to fish. Even if I don't catch anything, it sure does alot to keep me sane. I don't have a boat, so I'm looking for good places within 100 miles or so of Houston to do some freshwater bank fishing.
Also, if anyone knows where I can go and rent a jonboat for the day and fish, that would be cool too.
Thanks!

If you're talking freshwater, there are a couple of places I've been. A few miles north of Conroe/Willis in New Waverly there is Stubblefield lake. It's part of the Sam Houston National forest park system. Take I-45 north through Conroe, past Willis Tx. Look for a DPS truck weigh station on the right. Take the very next exit and cross over 45. Stay on this road and you will see a sign on the right that says stubblefield lake. Turn right and follow the gravel road as it curves to the right. Stay to your right and you cant miss it.(If the first crossover is not open, follow the feeder road to the next exit and cross over 45. Stay on this road and you will see a sign on the left that says stubblefield lake.) There's a bridge crossing the road that you can fish from. You can also launch a small boat there as well. Another place is lake Houston. Take beltway 8 west, cross under 59 and look for a sign that says Dewsome (sp?) park. The lake can be accessed from the bank in several places. I can't give you specific directions but it shouldn't be too hard to find. I hope this helps and I don't get you lost! Good Luck! Let us know how it goes. Stubblefield is best right after a good rain when the water is running. I've only fished lake Houston once.

Hey Addict, now would be a good time to try stubblefield if you can get to the bridge. I don't have the time right now, but if I did I'd sure give it a try before the water goes down. Theyve had lots if rain north of the area so the water should be running!

Thanks for the tip Joe! I checked out Stubblefield this weekend. Drove by Cagle Park on the way and decided to check it out too. They are doing some improvements on Cagle. They both look good.

What area do you live in? I used to live in The Woodlands and I know some great ponds with some really big bass. These are perfect for bank fishing. My friend and I caught about 20 bass ranging from 1 to 6 pounds in about 5 hours. Also, have you ever thought about tube fishing?

Addict...Fayette Lake is about 75 miles west of Houston. There is a delilghtful little fishing pier next to a swimming area and adjacent too the boat ramps. My better half determind we were going there to fish and had like to fill the cooler with catfish and perch {bream?} I surprised myself and a few other folks with three largemouths that seemed to like the area close to shore, in the middle of a sunny day. I rigged a small bluegill under a bobber and it disappeared when a bass about 5 pounds tried to take it some and show his meal to the big guys. Another LM of the same size started running away with his live bait dinner, and I educated her as to why she shouldn't be so greedy. I finally rigged a strip of blue/silver plastic, worked it half way abross the channel that is within easy casting distance of the pier, and kept her out of the water until I made a few pix, then sent her home. The kitty cats were not released and tasted delightful. My only suggestion is try to do your fishing Mon to Fri. The weekends tend to attrct a lot of small anglers who don't always seem to understand just how serious this idea of chasing fish really is.

Hey Addict...I tried to post a moment ago but was shut off for some reason...Fayette Lake is about 75 miles west of Houston and offers a nice campground, boat ramp and swim area, plus a small fishing pier where my better half pulled half the perch (Bream?) out of the lake, plus a great dinner of catfish. I fed a couple of 4-5 pound bass some live bream under a bobber and had a ball before sending them home with a smack on the tail to warm them about free meals. I also took a silmilar size LM out of the nearby channel by dragging a blue/white bass assassin over the grass. She was also sent home to warn her girl friends. 4 bux entry fee is worth the fun, but try to fish Fayette Mon to Fri, since the weekends tend to draw small anglers who don't really think bass fishing is that serious.... Anyway...give it a try... ==Ross==

Houston sucks.
Flat, ugly, mosquito infested, humid, moldy, no lakes, no fish, no deer, no nothing.
I live here and just want to say that I think Houston sucks.
Just a bunch of concrete.

There's a book available at Oshmans (got mine at 1/2 Price books) that lists 100+ drive up places to fish in the Houston area. Fresh and salt. Directions, pictures, best baits, etc... I can't remember the name of it offhand but it was written by Lorraine Leavell, a lady in the Houston area and I believe that it is in it's 12th or 13th printing. Found it! Hey Fish Addict,
Drop me line and I'll hook up with you. I only have a canoe but I also know some bank fishing prospects.
