When is the best time to use it and how? I have seen an angler or two use it thier PVA bags. Doesnt the seed float up after the bag is disolved?

Does boiling it help for anything other than method?

Ted
I use chicken scratch when chumming for cats.
Buff & carp cover me up- lol - It is a mix of cracked corn - milo- & other seed - Most of it sinks- I sour it before use (soak a week or so before use)- man it stinks but in warmer weather I have fish rolling in a short time- Don't have clue as to how it would work not soured??- I would boil if I were going to use it un-soaked-
Some else may have better info.

Tom

If you have a way to just get it wet before you get it out there that helps it not float. Something about surface tension and hydrogen bonds wink if not, just load the pva with it and you're good. I use it all the time.

I use it in my method mix sometimes. I think it helps it break up faster.

Here's a Good tip for ya. In the winter you don't want to plow it out. Bait less but in a very tight area, like 3-5 feet in diameter. IMO, a spod is the best way to do this. Cast the spod straight and clip your line, done

Ted - Just like most other seeds - you have to prepare them. Most mixes have mostly floating seeds - and some take more soaking than others. Most have sunflower seeds - and even after soaking/boiling, they will still float. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as bait releasing particles from the bottom will often attract fish from anywhere in the water column.
Bird seed is a great attractant year round, when added to method or a good spod mix. Some better mixes include hemp, and it's well known how that works. I generally use good quality Wild Bird mixes, that have Sunflower, Nyjer, Millet, Safflower seeds, along with peanuts, cracked corn etc.
I generally mix it with hemp seed ( I buy that by the 50lb bag) - 50/50, soak it for a day, and boil it for about 45mins, than let it cool overnight. If you want to add flavour, it's best done after boiling - and will soak in during the cooling process. I bag it in zip lock "session' bags - some sandwich and some quart, and freeze it. It will 'live' in the freezer indefinitely -- just remember to take it out a day before using it.
Just about any flavour will work. I just finished off a batch of Hot Sesame Chili Oil - that I made early last year -- and caught some great fish using it. Even without flavouring, it is a great attractant - as the small seeds disperse well around your swim - and once the fish find it -- won't often leave until they find every last one.
My recent catches were from Panko breadcrumb, plain prepared hemp - wetted with creamed corn. I will often prepare the bird seed/hemp, then sun dry it - until it is PVA friendly, and incorporate it in PVA stick mix.
In the grand scheme of things, bird seed is a great addition to your 'arsenal' laugh

Ted, if you go thru the members only section on Cag in the bait section you will find a plethora of information about all kinds of baits, boil times and soak times. Very useful stuff and you get different opinions on things so you can draw your own conclusion
