First, I have been wanting to really learn the shaky head. I bought a spinning reel and rod last year. Bought jig heads and worms. What is the best weight and length rod to use? When is the best time to do it and explain the best way if someone can.
Second- My dad and I usually don't deep water fish but we really would like to start. Do you guys fish deep water or shollow water all the time, or do you split up your time?
Thanks for the help.
Shane

I fish a shaky head on both a spinning set up and a bait cast set up. My spinning rod is 6'6" and the bait casting rod is 7'. I fish braid with a floro leader or I will fish 8-12lb floro or a copoly, all depends on the kind of stuff I am fishing around.
As for shallow or deep, that depends on when and where I find bait and/or fish. I prefer 12 feet and below , but can fish deeper if I feel the need.

Not sure why anyone would want to use Fluro on a Shakey head. Fluro sinks, and mono floats. The idea with a shakey head is to have the worm standing as straight up as possible so that when you shake it, the worm "dances". With a fluro leader or fluro line only, the worm is going to lay horizontally on the bottom. You might as well throw a T-Rig if you are going to lay the worm horizontally on the bottom....

Thats not totaly correct, as I do lure demos in a tank for customers and I use flurocarbon. it depend on the shakey head. The x-lock shakeyhead will stand a 10 1/2 trick worm straight up every time with fluro. it also has les stretch and more feel so if your fishing in clear water or intense pressure I would still consider using fluro.
As far as what to use set-up wise it depends on the application shakey head fishing has become so vast there are finnese set-ups and presentations that are best suited for 6-6 or 7ft spinning rods with light line and 4"-5" finesse worms
There are also big power shakey heads that have heavy heads and 6/0 hooks that are desingned to stand up big plastics and should be fished on a med-heavy 7'
I hope this helps you
Respectfully,
Jc Gwynne

Jc Gwynne Who makes the X locks? Cause I got see that if it works. I've tried a bunch of shaky head jigs in my pool and I've yet to find one that would stand up a trick worm with fluro.

I'd get a rod w/ a fast tip. I only throw 'em if things are really slow, but seem to work year around

I use floro 95% of the time and yes, it will still allow a shaky head to stand up a worm. The shape and weight is important though.

Shane, if you really want to catch bass here in Texas, you need to take that spinning rod and them shaky heads back and get some power fishing baits and Heavy action rods with 20# Big Game.. Well, thats my opinion, however my partner uses it a lot in back of my boat and catches some (smaller bass), however it seems that when he puts the shaky head down and starts power fishing, he catches more and bigger fish..
