this is the one i'm getting. so, i'm a little new to this kind of stuff & i was wondering what kind of chip am i going to need for it? and if anyone knows if it comes with down imaging? i found the same exact one in the bass pro shops catalog, but when i found it online, it doesn't say if it has down imaging or not. all advice appreciated. thanks.

I think it is the Humminbird Fish Finder 597ci HD DI Combo and not the one you linked.

The link you have is for the 788ci HD. THis is only Dual Beam 2D Sonar and GPS. THere are two models of 788ci:
788ci HD - Dual Beam 2D Sonar with GPS Mapping 788ci HD DI - 2D Sonar, Down Imaging and GPS Mapping
If you want Down Imaging you need the 788ci HD DI
