I quit using the glass rattles - seems that I always seem to find a rock to break 'em on.
Been using plastic ones I get at Bass Pro.

My dentist actually told me to use spent 22 cartridges, crimped on the open end with a bb inside. The guy swears its the only way, so I am going to have to try that out when I use all my glass up.

Nitrous oxide works for me.

So what hooks would be used for a .22 Short as compared to .22 Long Rifle? I know that streamer hooks come in 1X, 2X, up to 6X long. Would the crimped end point forward or backwards? is it sporting to place a little NO2 in the case? Might shorten the fight, especially on a bigger fish. Of course reviving them might be a more involved task.

I've seen a couple of ways to do this. One is crimp the end as mentioned. You just need to be careful not to crimp too much so that the bb has room to rattle. The longer shell casing would be a plus with this technique.

I've also seen folks use something like a small piece of flat foam to plug the open end and then seal it up with epoxy. This technique produces a larger, water-tight rattle chamber. You'd think this would produce a louder rattle.

Pheasabou, indeed. They're a pretty quick tie and pretty darn buggy. The glassheaded one has already been carp-spit approved.

I tied up a Hornberg. But I used Gadwall flank instead. I like the pattern of it in the feather. I used a grizzly hackle, and a ginger one. It could of used a bit more full hackle but I was running out of room. I used a TMC 2312 size 8 here. But on a regular one I used an R50 size 6 hook. I am gonna tie up more of these, and some Mrs. Simpsons too. I need a slight break from Salmon fly tying.


This one is the last one for tonight. It is the more traditional look. I like the hackle more full like this one. Both duck flank styles look good to me though.

Thank you. I am glad you liked them. I just approached the 3 year mark now. I started tying in mid January of 2008. I like the look of a Hornberg, I don't know why. I made one a long time ago, and then I guess I lost it. I made up a few of these, and I am gonna fish them. This evening I am working on a Mrs. Simpson, it is a little harder in a way. (I am on the first one though) I have been working on Salmon flies for the past couple of months. I am afraid I am in over my head. I have a little bug, so I am sticking around the house. Tying just a little. I needed a break from the Salmon tying. At first it wasn't so bad, but then it just got rough...lol. I am not sure if I have enough patience, or steady hands. But I am giving it my best shot. These Hornbergs were just what I needed to have a little fun. Not the work of a Salmon fly, but these ought to be a killer pattern if I can fish 'em right.

Mrs. Simpson....I tied two this evening. One I just used regular church window pheasant. It was okay. This one though I used a different feather, and I think it looks a bit nicer. I also used squirrel tail for this one.

Very nice. I had to wonder why someone would name a fly Mrs. Simpson. Okay, it was named for THAT Mrs. Simpson. Cool to get a little history with the fly tying.
