So, dont use drilled range cubes? Ted -- the water was 46F when we were there, and a 2" long 'test' cube took well over an hour to break down in the margins (also 46F). I had drilled cubes with me - but didn't even bother trying them - as the water was so cold. I think you are a whole lot better off (assuming you are pre baiting with cubes?) grinding them up and making a nicely embellished method/pack with them - that you know will break in a few minutes. It will give all the benefits of 'matching the hatch' - but not leave you waiting for the hook/hair bait to 'melt down' small enough for the Buffs to take it. Remember - presentation is tantamount to success. Howcome I caught a 47 on a little piece of zig foam? No cubes needed for that one -- only chummed ones Just a thought that might help you!!

Here's another thought. I've seen 3 buffs caught on the same cube. The first not two minutes after it was cast. If they're feeding, they're not gonna wait for it to get small although, small does often work.

Thanks guys. So, just grind some cubes in a blender or food processor?

Hey Ted something you might want to try is baiting up with calf-manna and also adding it to your method.
PB Common = 36-8 PB Buffalo = 62-8 PB Mirror (fully scaled) 13-0 PB Flat Head Catfish = 44

I do have some PVA bags, but the only way for me to get the calf manna out there would be to wet it and pack it then chunk it in my catapult.
Calf manna is pricey!

buff man chris caught all his 50+ buffs using calf-manna, you can buy a 25lb bag for a decent price, a catapult would work fine, I use a wacker blaster, good thing about it is you just add water and it will bind.

I'll try both! Ted - I'd bust them up with a hammer first, then rough chop the pieces. Even then it might be a little tough on the blender as they are pretty hard. I've never tried making method/pack with cubes, however my first choice would be using creamed corn as a wetter. It is also a mild binder - which will help hold it together. Beware though - you might well need further additives to get a good consistency that has a reasonable break time. Plain breadcrumbs are a great binder and yellow cornmeal is a good breaker -- both relatively inexpensive. Tread carefully though -- and only add small amounts (if needed) at a time. You'll know when it binds tight enough to cast and if you make small test balls and drop them in the margins where you can see them -- you can time the break time. You'll be doing a bit of pioneering so have to be patient The 'active' ingredient in Calf Manna is Anise - so, if you want to flavour your mix - just buy a small bottle of Anise Extract from the market. Schilling make a good one - and it is pretty potent and you won't need to add much to the mix. Remember - if you can smell it -- the fish will smell it from long distances. This way - you won't need the added expense of adding Calf Manna to the mix (NOT that that would be a bad thing --- just the extract is a cheaper way of doing it) I hope this helps -- good luck!!

How bout this? My feedstore sells cotton seed in a meal or coarse flour form. I use it in my dough baits. Its cheap. As it is mainly cotton seed it should be a good substitute for having to pound the heck out of range cubes. I have yet to try it in a method mix, or other baits, but will this season.
I don't know whether it is a binder or not.

Range cubes cut very nicely into small pieces with a sawzaw. You can cut them into maybe 1/4" thick and they will be like a little pancake on your hair. of course, they will break down quicker, being that they are so much smaller.
Brid, great info. I will try to track down some anise today at HEB. if I cannot find it there, I will order some somewhere.
I REALLY appreciate all yall's sharing of info. I have learned a ton from yall and have a ton more to learn.
Thanks guys!
