Some airlines don't allow over a certain length. I used a rod carrier that could be extended and was made out of a simi soft plastic material on a flight to the nationals at Grand Lake Ok. Problem on arrival was found after unpacking, 3 of the 4 rods were broken during the flight. They must have folded that rod tube in half to break those rods. The tube went right back to its original shape and looked fine @ pickup. The airlines paid for the rods but I had to purchase rods in Ok to fish the event. All of my reels were with me at carry on. I think I would lean towards the PVC and cap idea.

the best option is to send them UPS to your destination, send them a day before you leave and they will most likely be there the day after you arrive
